Monday. The first day of school. I've spent the last few weeks getting ready for this day. The new teachers the new students the new....friends?
I don't get much of those. They come and go, never really staying longer than a month or two. Always losing touch with me after gaining new friends in their other classes. Getting up out of bed, I moved slowly to the bathroom attached to my bedroom. Turning on the shower to the coldest setting possible, I strip of my dirty pajamas and toss them into the basket a few feet away. I stepped into the shower and sat on the floor for a few minutes letting the cold drops cascade along my head and back. This was going to be a long day.
Finally getting out, I wrap a towel around my body and grab a separate towel from the shelf to wrap around my short, curly mess of hair. I walk over to the sink to brush my teeth, and my hair. I walk out of the bathroom and strode into the closet. I decided to wear something simple but fashionable. A graphic tee, dark wash jeans, and my white vans. I grabbed a beanie off the vanity and my bag off the ground. I run downstairs and walk into the kitchen to see my mom cooking breakfast with a smile on her face.
"Morning, Mom" I kissed her cheek and grabbed and apple off the island.
"Morning, Vanessa" she scopes a spoon full of cheesy eggs onto a plate for my dad who is sitting on the dinning room table reading something in the newspaper.
"Take this to your father for me, Venn" she hands me the plate of eggs.
"Sure thing, Mom" I grab the plate from her hand and go pass the plate to my dad.
"Morning, Dad" I put the plate down on the table and lean down to kiss him on the cheek.
"Hey sweetheart, ready for 11th grade?" he puts down his news paper and a grabs the fork resting next to the plate.
"Sure I um....I guess".
"OK then, just don't forget about the family curse!" He says with a light chuckle.
"Sure whatever, see ya guys, bye!" I walk out the front door and lock the door behind me. On my way to school I think about the so called 'Family curse' that has been in my family for generations. That we can so call 'feel the emotions of our past family members' or 'see into the spirit world' and all that weird jazz. Its all junk. Its never happen to me yet and i'm 17!
About a half block away from school I can see the building, the students, some looking around lost and some chatting with there friends that they haven't seen over the last 3 months of summer break, and teachers that welcome in the new students and try to maintain the students that are already causing a problem. Ignoring everyone in the courtyard, I walk into the school and straight to my locker, putting away everything that I don't need and walk to my first period class. I sit in the far back corner of the room and silently pray that no one sits next to me. The bell rings and just my luck, that jerk Adrian Hower sits in the open seat next to me.
We used to be friends back in elementary school. Best friends, my only friend. We used to play by a creek near my house. But the summer after school ended he went to camp and came back a completely different person.
"Yo Rodgers, did you miss me?" he says smirking at me.
At glance over at him once before looking down at my desk again. Ugh this is going to be a long, very very long school year.
