Was it just Frost's luck that Spark had resigned as a Moon Wolf? Or could he have understood her frustration with his foolishness? Throughout the last month, Spark had resigned as a Moon Wolf and had become a Fighter and Pup-Trainer. Pixel had taken his place.
The small white mottled wolf was skilled in singing, and was smart in the way of things. It was The Essenceless' ceremony that night, so there would be a party.
"I call all my Packmates here for a ceremony each wolf goes through. It is time for the Assigning of Essence to the Essenceless. Spreckie, step up please." Orbit called the Pack together, her black and white striped tail waving in the wind.
As the Caribou Princess stepped up to the Ceremony Pedestal, Orbit laid her tail across Spreckie's shoulders and rested her muzzle on her head.
"Shi kahn lam jai lan yeh ahnm," she recited. The ancient words of the Samalee wolves, in times before the Packs, were magical. Pink and purple sparks flew around Spreckie's small body, and when they disintegrated into her fur, Orbit instructed her to raise her paw.
The Caribou Princess concentrated, and suddenly, tiny sparks flew out. Spreckie concentrated even more, and her body was bathed in fire, the purple wolf pup stood amazed as the flames lapped at her paws. Dry gasped.
It was her mother's worst nightmare, Frost realized. Her pup was a fire essence! The pack howled in congratulations, then Spreckie leaped down, the flames leaving a trail behind her.
Messi and Keebler padded up to the Ceremony Pedestal. It was the custom for littermates to perform the ceremony together, but Spreckie was an only pup.
"Shi kahn lam jai len yeh ahnm," she recited again. Wind swept through the air, ruffling Messi's fur.
"He is a wind essence!" Orbit howled.
Little blue stars swam around Keebler and created a larger star.
"He is a telepathy essence!" Orbit called. Both pups leapt off the ceremony pedestal. Wind swept through the camp when Messi bounded past, and the blue stars followed Keebler. The three new trainees were going to train to become the heart of the Pack of Illumination.
Cosmic and Reske were hard at work planning the celebration. Reske was a veteran Sun Wolf, and Cosmic had only taken the position to become his mate. Though her essence of stars was useful for the time, being able to clear the sky and let the constellations show. This skill was hard to master, so for lessons Cosmic usually visited Samakari, Lai or Orbit for help.
Samakari and Lai were natural-born Teachers. Orbit had the same essence as Cosmic, so she could help her with managing her essence.
As night fell on the Pack of Illumination, Cosmic padded over to Orbit and touched noses. They chanted a sacred spell for the sky to clear.
"Zin saman al rofh ahdl ajreuh ahnke," the two she-wolves recited. One by one, the clouds in the sky began to drift apart, leaving a large, open space for the moon to shine on the Ceremony Rock.
