"Dinner will be done in about an hour." I hear my aunt say, pulling me from my thoughts as i watch her take a seat on the rocking chair opposite me."Okay." I say, blowing a piece of stray hair out of my eyes. It was incredibly hot and the worst part about that was that the air conditioner didn't work. I was basically laying in my own puddle of sweat.
"You know, you've been cooped up in this darn thing since you got here."
"Yeah and?" I didn't intend for my voice to come as snobbish as it did. Maybe the heat that was getting to me, or maybe it was because my parents left me in a middle of fucking nowhere.
My aunt ignored my comment and continued speaking as if my hard demeanor didn't have an affect on her. "They have a beautiful library a few miles away, you were always such a big reader when you were younger."
"Yeah. When I was younger." I shot back almost immediately.
"Okay well, I think they have a computer there too." Her words were enough to get me up and on my feet in seconds.
"Lets go." Aunt Helen shakes her head and states that she was going to get her keys from her purse.
On our way to the library we pass numerous shops and old 50's styled diners. If you were to ask me, the town looked like a complete disaster in itself. The grounds weren't kept up, the grass was replaced with weeds and over growing vines. Everywhere I looked I saw broken signs, dead trees, and paint chipped fences. Each time the car pulled to a stop sign, someone stared at me with a look of confusion- possibly fear. It was almost like they were trying to silently tell me I shouldn't be here, that I didn't belong in their little fucked up ghost town. Their stares were enough to make my skin crawl.
The car pulled to a final stop as Aunt Helen put the car into park. My mouth pretty much dropped to the floor once my eyes landed on the library. It was beautiful- sure, it needed some work and you could tell it was old in age, but it was beautiful nonetheless.
"It's beautiful," I say, voicing my thoughts aloud.
"That library was built when your grandmother was just a little girl. They have every book and file about this town in there just about." She replies back.
I opened the car door and turned my head to look at my aunt. "I'm sure the inside is even more breathtaking."
She hums in reply. "When do you want me to get you?" She's peering over into the passenger side seat, talking through the window that was rolled down.
"I think I can walk it, I know where to go."
"Just don't loose track of time, your mother would have my head served on a silver platter if she were to find out you walked home alone in the dark."
I laugh at her anaology before giving her a quick wave, watching the volts wagon pull away from the curb and onto the main road. Once I realize that I'm alone for the first time since I got to this town I let a little squeal surpass my lips. I run up the steps of the library and enter the large building.
I was right. It was even more beautiful from the inside. My flip flops hit the shiny marble flooring beneath my feet as I stare at the building in awe. There had to be at least 200,000 books in this thing. I walked slowly, hands brushing over the extremely large cherry oak book shelves admiring the craftsmanship. The architecture in this place was astounding too. I made my way up the large stairs and onto the second floor to find even more books. Skimming through the isles I try to find something that would catch my eye.
