Now, I have been debating this topic for a while. Where does a joke cross the line? What is the line you ask? The line is where something meant to be harmless becomes offensive or even hurtful.
In my opinion rape jokes or saying "Nigger" does cross the line. These two things happen everyday, though, and generally nobody minds.
But, what about the 13 year old girl who holds back tears and laughs it off when you make that petty rape threat joke? She does not find it funny.
You might be thinking, its okay to make a joke about rape because it's just a joke. It doesn't mean anything, therefore it's okay. You know what? So what if it doesn't mean anything to you, because to the girl having flash backs of being held down and struggling to fight back, or the man remembering being told "At least you got laid, get over it." That means everything to them.
Do you know why? Because ever since they had that sexual abuse experience all they can think about is what happened to them and how it holds them back in so many ways daily. Sometimes they can't even speak because they are so emotionally damaged that they consider almost everyone to be a threat. That isn't their fault but it is yours when you choose to make that "joke".
Why should you have the right to bring up something so horrid and terrifying to them because it doesn't mean anything to you?
I recently just started to realize why people shouldn't be making jokes or saying "Nigger" or things like that. I believe that racism is a huge problem even today.
EVERY RACE NOW DAYS EXPERIENCES RACISM!
Everyday nations are belittled as people or stereotypes are given. Maybe the Caucasian girl who had wanted to dance all her life is told she can't by a African American girl because she believes white people can't (yes, this actually happens).
It seems irrelevant but their are many other situation too! White people and Indian people might be attacked by Mexicans calling them inferior due to race. Or the fact that the the - excuse my French - putrid, shit-for-brains, immoral fucking KKK still exists!
Surely it's meaningless but think about what that word means. It means inferior people. It means worthless because you are black. Maybe that's not how you direct it but that doesn't make it okay.
If you call someone a "cunt" - but because it means wonderful person to you - that does not make it okay. It is the same concept.
These topics need to be more discussed because some people really don't know how these things affect others! The line is definitely crossed with these topics. The next time you even think about making a rape joke or using that language just remember what it really means.
