Ava

It was another typical day for Ava; wake up, argue with her mother, and then be late for school. Except her father was actually there.

"Hey hun. Enjoy your first day?" He asked. She rolled her eyes.

"Were you there?" She raised an eyebrow. Her father, Dean, shook his head 'no'.

"Then there's your answer," she got up from the table and grabbed her bag. "But maybe I'll actually see you after school, no?" Her father didn't say anything, he just looked down. "didn't think I would anyway," Ava mumbled and walked out the door. She wiped the silent tear from her eye as quickly as it fell. I don't need you she thought. I don't need any of this..

Ava stopped to get an iced coffee as she always would before school. "That'll be $1.68 ma'am," the same lady that was there everyday spoke with a smile. The bell above the door dinged and the lady's smile instantly fell. Ava looked behind herself to see the lovely face of Leo. She groaned and swiped her card, acting as if she hadn't noticed him.

"Thank you, enjoy your coffee," her smile was fake and I could feel how tense she was. What is wrong with her.. The lady handed me my receipt. I noticed there was black ink seeping into the paper.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS MAN. HE IS DANGEROUS.

I looked up from the paper and looked her in the eyes. I could see fear written all over her face. She moved her hair from her neck to reveal a huge purple and red mark. It definitely wasn't a hickey.. She quickly covered it and "smiled" again before walking off to serve the others.

"Hey," I jumped back and turned around to see Leo. I crumpled the receipt and slipped it into my back pocket.

"Umm.. Hey.." I cleared my throat. "what are you doing here..?" I hesitantly asked.

"I knew I'd see you again.." He chuckled. He was being creepy and I didn't like it. "You uh..didn't text me or anything," Is this guy seriously serious right now??

"Yeah, no, I um.. I had things to take care of, you know? A lot going on at home.." I said shyly. I began to walk out of Dunkin Donuts. "I'll text you after school," I called back and rushed out the door. Something about Leo and that lady rubbed me the wrong way.

*********

"Is there a reason you're late, Ms. Jones?" My math teacher asked. I simply held up the cup of coffee and raised and eyebrow.

"I mean, I know you see the cup of coffee in my hand, sir," I sat in my chair and sighed as he began to walk to my desk.

"Avann-"

"Ava. It's Ava." I cut him short.

"Ava.." He sighed. "its only your fourth day, is it really that hard for you to show up a little earlier?"

"Yes." I said, dismissing him from continuing to lecture me. He sighed again and walked back to his crusty desk.

"Detention, Avanna," the way he said my name made my insides twist into a million knots. I hated it, and he did it purposely. I stood from my seat and slowly walked towards Mr. Kash.

"I don't care for detention. And I told you not to call me that. If I have to tell you again, I will personally rip out your fucking throat and somehow make you eat it." Everyone in the class looked at me and had shocked expressions. They didn't expect me to say it. They didn't expect me to say anything.

Mr. Kash couldn't speak. His mouth hung open and he began to aimlessly write down pointless words. He didn't hand me my detention slip, instead he walked out of the room. I was guessing he went to the office himself because the paper wasn't on the desk anymore. The class began to speak, so I grabbed my belongings and stood by the door waiting for security. And just as I thought, they came to escort me.

******

I sat in the park on the swing, waiting for school to end. I was kicked out of the school for 3 days so I decided to wait out the rest of the day here. I couldn't let my parents see me, they would cause a bigger problem, giving me no choice but to use my words against them. And my words hurt.

Crunch

I whipped my head towards the direction the sound came from and saw nothing. "Hello.." I called out. It instantly reminded me of a horror movie. The one who calls out hello as if the killer would answer always died. I chuckled at my thoughts and shook my head. It's nothing but a squirrel probably. The sound of fireworks sounded from a distance, distracting my from my thoughts. Why the hell would anyone be setting off fireworks during the day time?

A scream followed the fireworks and I then realized it wasn't fireworks I was hearing. They were multiple gun shots. "What the fuck.." I squinted my eyes and got off the swing to see if i was able to see anything. I could see people running in every direction to get away from wherever the shooter was. I backed up as they got closer and closer. I looked around, now in panic, to search for anywhere to hide. The slide was too easy and so was the jungle gym, so i decided to just climb the nearest tree.

I slung my bag over a branch and started to make my way up. Just as I almost reached the top, the people were now running through the park still screaming. The gun shots got closer, so I leaned against the branch I was on, hiding myself the best I could. Please don't see me, I pleaded in my head. The people were on the other side of the road by now, but there were 3 men in green suits. The suits were identical to the clothes army men wear, except they were all olive green.

"Look for anyone who may be hiding, we must kill everyone for our own good. Not a soul can be trusted," the tallest one spoke. The second guy standing next to him had blonde hair and the third was the shortest. Wow what a bunch, I thought. I rolled my eyes. What the hell is going on here..

"If there's anyone hiding in this park..i suggest you come out now. 'Cause if I have to find you, I wont be as nice.." The tall one called out. I closed my eyes and rested my head back on the branch.

They won't see me, there's more than enough leaves..
