With trembling hands I pulled out my phone and dialled Anna's number. She didn't answer, she was probably in class. I didn't bother leaving a message. I just ran inside grabbed my shoes and ran out the door. I didn't stop until I was in the lobby of the dance studio and about seven moms looked at me with worried faces. I ignored them and ran into the studio where Anna stood with the girls.
"And one, two, three," she said smiling at the girls as they did postions and danced as piano chimed lightly in the background.
"Hi Miss Hillary!" one girl said. Everyone's head snapped toward me. I wiped my cheeks and gave them a forced smile. I looked at Anna who looked concerned.
"You ok?" she mouthed. I shook my head. Outloud she shouted, "Keep doing positions, I'll be back in a minute." She pulled me into the back studio we used for smaller calsses. She closed the doors and turned to me. "What's wrong? Did Clapton hurt you?" I shook my head.
"No, he didn't," I said my voice trembling. "We g-got into a fight. He got angry, stole my car and left."
"We should call mom and dad," Anna said heading for her bag. I grabbed her arm.
"No!" I protested. "Anna, don't! They'll freak out if they find he stole my car!" She hesitated and I dropped her arm. I looked at my phone and back up at her. "Give me your car so I can search for him?"
"Ok, don't be out too late, and call me," she said and went to get her car keys. She placed them in my hand.
"Promise not to tell mom and dad?" I asked her. She nodded. I hugged her quickly and then ran out the door, through the studio, past the curious, nosy mothers and out to Anna's car. I hopped in and began to drive. I rode through the school parking lot, I drove past the house, I drove all through town. I finally pulled over and leaned my head on the steering wheel. I pulled out my phone and tried calling him again.
"You've reached Clapton, congrats, leave a message, or don't...I really couldn't care less," his voicemail said. I sighed.
"Clapton, it's me again," I said. "Please, call me back!" I hung up and put my phone down. I closed my eyes and started crying again. My heart stopped for a minute when my phone began ringing. I grabbed it and answered it not bothering to look at the caller ID.
"Hello?" I said quickly.
"Meet me at the beach," Clapton said and he hung up. The beach? I hadn't looked there. I started the car and pulled out and sped off down the road. Living in Berkeley had its perks, one of them being the beach. It took me twenty minutes to get there. I parked the car and jumped out. I ran up the small board walk and looked out over the sand. Since it was pretty late there weren't many people out there.
"Clapton!" I shouted. I jogged down the beach ditching my flip flops only to hold them. "Clapton!"
"Hillary," someone said. I whirled around to see Clapton coming towards me. I ran full speed at him and jumped. He stumbled back as his arms wrapped around my waist.
"Clapton, I am so so so sorry," I whispered as he held me close. He tensed up and set me down.
"You have nothing to be sorry about," he said his face hard with a scowl. "I'm the one who should be sorry. You were just trying to help me and I got super pissed." He pushed a strand of hair out of my eyes and tucked it behind my ear. "I'm not big on charity, I've had a rough life and people have been giving me handouts ever since my mom...died... And I don't like them. I-I could contain myself when James helped me with the scholarship to Berkeley, but Juilliard? I couldn't..." I reached up and cupped his face with my hands.
"Why didn't you just tell me?" I asked him. He looked down at our bare feet.
"I didn't know what you were doing," he said softly and looked up at me. I wrapped my arms around his torso and held him against me, burying my face in his chest. Slowly his arms wrapped around my shoulders and he held me tight.
"You scared me," I whispered. He kissed the top of my head.
"I know," he whispered into my hair. We stood there for few minutes, the salty air blowing. Unexpectedly he picked me up and threw me over his shoulder.
"Oh my god!" I screamed as he headed for the water. "Clapton, no!!"
"Yes!" He shouted as he ran towards the water.
Clapton's P.O.V
I couldn't help smiling as I ran towards the water. Hilly hit my back and resisted me as best she could, but it was no use.
"Clapton!" She screamed. I laughed and set her down her feet touching the cold ocean water. She slapped my shoulder.
"C'mon, Wildfire, live a little," I said with grin as I peeled off my shirt.
"The last time you said that I got drunk," she pointed out. I shrugged and began to pull off my shorts. Her eyes widened. "I am not skinny dipping!" I laughed and tossed my clothes up onto the dry sand.
"Neither am I," I said grinning with hands placed on my hips. "C'mon Hills, no one is even here." She pulled her phone out of her pocket and sent someone a text before walking over to where I put my clothes. I watched as she peeled off her shirt. My heart pounded in my chest. Her slim figure and tan smooth skin, it made me feel weird. She slid her shorts off and turned to me. I really wanted to kiss her right then. Hillary gave me a small smile before she ran past me into the ocean. I jogged to catch up but she stopped.
"IT'S COLD!" She screamed trying to run past me. I caught her around the waist and spun her around. She squealed as the water splashed around us sprinkling us with cold ocean water.
"Can't handle chilly water?" I asked her and ran further into the water. She screamed through her laughter and clung to me.
"Don't you dare drop me!" She said. I grinned.
"I didn't think of that!" I said and my hands slipped a little.
"No!" She screamed and held me tighter. "Clapton don't!" I dropped to my knees so we were both neck deep. She smacked me on the shoulder. She laughed as we stood up.
"Hey Hilly?" I said taking her hand. She looked up at me as I leaned down and kissed her.
