"All the hardest, coldest people you meet were once as soft as water. And that's the tragedy of living." - Iain Thomas
<><><><><><><><>The alarm on Jayden's phone beeps, abruptly interrupting his work. He's been so focused on the documents he's reading that time went by quickly. A loud grumbling noise comes from his stomach, overlapping with phone's alarm.
He'll have to deal with food later.
After downing a water bottle the CEO left at his desk yesterday, the stomach grumbling comes to a halt. Not a second later he quiets the irritating alarm with a touch of a button. The time on the screen reads 2:45pm.
Jayden rises from his seat, making his way to the window overlooking the city. He looks at his reflection and fixes his appearance; the board are mostly strict old people with the exception of one of them being his only friend and another, his father. Even though Jayden's the CEO of West Maverick Enterprise, the board has as much control as him.
"Just hold your ground," Jayden mutters to himself. It's a saying he continues to tell himself whenever he feels pressured, a habit from his lifeless childhood. It's always been a competition and "being the winner" since he was little.
The CEO still remembers what his father, Jasper Maverick, told him whenever he looses in an event, "Losers don't stand their ground in important situations. Don't become one, Jay, or a bright future will be hopeless for you and my company."
Of course his mother didn't approve of it. But, with her away most of the time, what's there to prevent him from being spitted out the other end of the neglected train?
The pressure from his father decreased after a year of Jayden steering the company. Maybe now that the old man can sit back and relax, he can finally see how successful his son is.
Jayden leaves his office with a confident stride. Whatever the board wants from him, he can complete with no problem. So far they've been satisfied with his work, but what's this about him having a "problem?"
After less than a minute, he enters the larger meeting room. It's more private, compared to the normal rooms, with no glass walls except for the windows facing outside. The usual sleek table sits in the middle but it holds more seats for the board.
A few board members are already seated, talking quietly amongst each other. Jayden doesn't even get one glance from any of them except for his father that gets up from his seat. The old man motions him to sit at the end of the table.
The CEO first approaches Jasper and whispers, "What is this all about exactly?"
His father shakes his head, "I'm afraid you will dislike. You will have to listen to the company's shareholders." Yup, usually the board members are stock or shareholders; it's the same rude and old person, according to Jayden.
Jayden gives up on getting the gist from Jasper, making his way to his seat. Not a few seconds later, more board members show up, except for two, Geoffrey Barrick and Karl Weber.
The present members give him a stern gaze. Jayden doesn't turn away from the intense looks, personally challenging it with his own.
One man speaks up first, "After discussing about this issue for months, we've all come to the same decision."
"What is 'this' issue?" Jayden asks.
