Kira slowly made her way towards home after giving the news of their victory to Gouenji. Her black horse trod lightly as he was just as exhausted as her. After all, they both had been at war for the past two days. The blood from Kira's wound was still dripping a little but it was not as bad as before.

She carefully got down as she reached home. She took the horse to his stable and then dragged herself into the house. She closed the door behind her as she entered her room. This was her routine after every battle and her family knew not to disturb her. She looked around and found her room just as she had left it three days ago. She took a sigh and started taking her armor off and changed her clothes. She applied some medicine to her wound and lay down on her bed quickly falling asleep.

After about an hour or so, she suddenly woke up with a sharp pain in her arm. She realized that she had tried to turn to her side in her sleep and that had agitated the wound. She tried to sleep again but the pain wouldn't let her. To keep her mind off of it she tried to think of something else. After a while, her mind involuntarily went to Gouenji. She remembered their interaction earlier that day and how he got worried the moment he saw blood on her arm. He did that almost every time she returned from a battle. It reminded her of her childhood.

"Hahaha, you can't catch me!" Kira exclaimed with excitement as she ran around the garden with Gouenji chasing her.

"You think you're faster than me?" Gouenji replied.

"I don't 'think' I am faster than you, I actually am faster than you." Kira retorted, looking back and giggling but just the next moment she was flat on the ground. Apparently, she had somehow tripped even though there was nothing to trip on. Gouenji ran up to her and helped her get up.

"Are you okay? Did you get hurt? Why did you have to run so fast?" He bombarded her with a series of questions with concern in his voice.

"I am fine." She said but she had tears in her eyes.

"No, you obviously are not." He replied as he noticed her scraped knee. He then ordered his servants to bring first aid. He helped Kira sit down on the grass and treated her wound himself.

"You should be more careful." He said as he finished wrapping the bandage.

Kira wiped her tears and nodded with a smile.

"He still cares." The thought made her smile but the thought that followed took it away. She thought about how she acts around him. She hadn't talked to him like a friend, in years. She didn't remember when was the last time they laughed together like old friends. She made it look like it didn't matter to her but the truth was she still cared too. She wished things could go back to the way they were. She remembered every moment they had spent together.

But she also knew her place was not among his friends. He was a member of the royal family and she was one of the common folks; it just wasn't right. Their friendship would only lead to trouble and nothing good could come out of it.

When she was young, her father would always scold her for sneaking away into the royal garden and as she grew up she slowly understood why he did so. She then seemed to see the differences clear and eventually she understood that it was best that she didn't go out of her place.

This is why she tried to forget about Gouenji and focused on her training completely. Her hard work finally paid off when she became the first female knight in the history of the kingdom. She remembered the day she first went to the royal court. It was the same day Gouenji became the new emperor.

She entered the royal court and walked up to her new emperor. She noticed that he smiled as soon as he saw her but she kept a straight face. He tried to say something but couldn't. She was curious about what it was but couldn't ask.

She sat down on one knee in front of him and bowed her head down.

"I'm your humble servant, my lord, I will fight for you and this kingdom; from today till my last breath." She said trying to stop her voice from shaking. It was hard for her to act like that. She could almost feel how disappointed he was but she thought it was for the best. She didn't want to give him hopes she couldn't fulfil but putting up this façade was harder than she thought especially when she saw how she was hurting him. She shut her eyes tightly and gritted her teeth to stop herself from falling apart. He couldn't see her doing that because her head was still bowed down. She composed herself before getting up and that was the last time she let herself feel vulnerable. She had embraced her new being completely. She hid her feelings deep inside her heart and concentrated on her duties.

But now, it all came back to her at once. She did not know why was she feeling that way all of a sudden when all this time she had managed to keep it off her mind.

"Forgive me." She whispered as she closed her eyes seeing all the memories flash in front of her, one by one. She smiled sadly longing for those days to come back but she didn't know if it could ever happen.
