To think about it, it was actually stupid to sacrifice one's life for Evan's problems.
And unfortunately, David was one of those stupid people to have almost lost his life twice because of this endless Jonathan-Evan little catfight. Couldn't they just get over it and kiss each other and end this with a start of something new?
No, David thought, while lying down on the floor in silence, why would they? Evan's way more complicated than that – there's no such thing as an ordinary ending for their relationship this time.
What David thought of was true – Evan was beyond normal and he wouldn't like it if his plan didn't end the way he wanted it to be. Getting Jonathan into an accident and give a lapse to his memory were the example of his plan's greatest achievements (at first, he wasn't 100% sure of it himself, but "trust me, guys. Craig here won't kill him, so you should probably trust him, too," was adequate to reassure himself), and there was no way something was going to ruin everything – like Craig's death. It almost swerved his plan out of its way – and abandon his goal because of a detail he left out. And what was his goal, you asked?
Evan simply wanted Jonathan back to his life, but the latter was having none of his well-deserved simplicity. So, there went the Plan B. And if you're left wondering whether Evan had some other plans beneath his sleeves or not, he totally had some. Plan C, D, E, F, G – every alphabet you name it, and he would have them rolled out in front of you.
David smiled at the thought of Evan. Evan really was a unique fellow. He was the kind of person you would like to get to know, but once you did, you'd cringe at him every time he opened his mouth. Although David knew that, Evan was like that weird brother he never had.
As one of Evan's pawns, David held an important role. Taking care of Jonathan was an easy feat, but stealing Jonathan's heart and pretending like he didn't know a jack shit about it were the parts where he never thought about before. After all, he had some other important things to attend to: the nightmares he had for 24/7, Tyler who was rapidly losing his sane mind, and the deteriorating state of his and Lui's relationship. It was bad enough to know that he was currently leaving every single one of them unattended.
The pain on his stomach had eventually dulled a little bit, and he was fine for now. He didn't dare moving a limb, though – he was afraid either his act of dying would be discovered or the pain would come back, and the combination of both would be worse.
"Don't die on this, you stupid mammal," Lui once told him with a sneer before they finally executed Evan's plan years ago, while his hands were busied with adjusting the lapel of David's leather coat, the air was filled solely with the fragrance of Lui's new shampoo, "if you do, I'll never forgive you, and in exchange, it'll never be peaceful for you in the hereafter."
Somehow, holding onto those words kept him alive for these years, but after Lui said that, everything that happened between them messed up. No one ever decided to clarify anything. No one ever came up with the thought of talking things out. Everyone was just too engrossed with carrying out their roles for Evan's theatrical play.
Does Lui still remember what he said?
David wished Evan and Jonathan could sort this hell out fast, so that he could finally sort his own hell.
"There you are."
David's eyes snapped open, eyes quickly searching the source of the voice.
"I thought I'd seen the last of you."
Suddenly, someone's face popped into his view, looking down at him in pity. The darkness might have engulfed their surrounding, but David could see the owner of the voice clearly.
"L-Lui?"
Lui just waved at him.
"Don't look so surprised, David. I've replaced Tyler thrice now, since he's mentally unstable to do anything right," he said, and reached out a hand at David, "anyways, we need to get out of here before the cops beat us to it. Jonathan and Evan have escaped, too, so...can you get up?"
The other shook his head. "I...I can't feel my legs. Sorry," he said as if it wasn't something new to him, "I didn't even have the chance to check where the bullet went. Can you see it?"
"Yeah. Totally," Lui replied, and he tutted before he decided to squat right next to David and do something David never thought he would.
He picked David up, bridal style.
"Whoa–"
"I knew this would happen sooner or later, and I bet you didn't realize that I've been practicing?," Lui said, and it was kind of weird to see that Lui was way more talkative than before, "told you not to die, and did you think I wouldn't get responsible about what I said?"
David groaned when the pain between his chest and his stomach struck him again, but he caught what Lui said. Lui...Lui didn't seem to have forgotten his own words. It was amazing to get a direct reply from the Lui himself.
"Uh...thanks," David said, abashed, "I feel like an overgrown baby."
"You are an overgrown baby," Lui answered as he barged through the back door and slammed it close again, "God, you look horrible now. It's a miracle you didn't instantly die."
"Thanks," David curtly replied, wincing as he held his arms up to loop them around Lui's neck, "and I mean it."
"Did you learn how to say your thanks to me while you left me without any message?," the other said again, unlocking the getaway car.
"About that...," David finally spoke up, sighing, "I'm sorry I never had the chance to tell you that I'm sorry. I really am. I left you without any notice, which was downright stupid."
"Yeah, yeah, tell that to the old Lui," he said, opening the door to the shotgun seat, and how he managed to open the door David didn't know. He slowly put the taller down on the seat – with a lot of profanities leaving his mouth.
Lui rounded the car after he closed the door and got into the driver seat, turning on the car's engine.
"All right. Let's get out of here."
And they drove off to the darkness, just in time to see that the cops had arrived.
