“Tributes. We welcome you. And we salute your courage and sacrifice.” The president begins speaking. Our costumes are still shining, illuminating the arena and making the tributes around us glow. The president continues with the familiar lines of the Hunger Games. “Happy hunger games, and may the odds be ever in your favour.” The crowd is cheering and screaming, calling the tributes names. The horses pull our chariot out, and I get a glimpse of the brown haired boy, dressed in his poorly styled costume. As we exit the stage, Samantha and the stylists welcome us.

“You were brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!” Regina squeals as the turns off the costumes. “You’ve made a fantastic first impression. now all we have to do is make the interviews even better!”

It’s dark outside, probably around 9pm, and I find myself thinking of my bed every now and then. Of course, I’m long way from home, far away from my threadbare but comfy bed.

“You haven’t got anything to do, so I suggest we head up to our apartment and eat some food” Samantha says, offering me a hand as we walk towards the lift.

“I’m not really hungry, mind if I just go to bed?” I hear Emerald ask. Her voice sounds raspy and exhausted.

“I’m not hungry either” I slip in as the lift doors open, revealing our apartment. The walls are forest green with streaks of black, and the ceiling is plain white. There are futuristic designed furniture everywhere and decorative little vases.

“Your room is down that corridor, to the left and then the second door on the right side” Samantha points at the corridor. “It’s gold and white, specially decorated for the tributes, you won’t miss it”

As I mumble a thank you before setting of at a quick walk, I hear Emerald muttering something to Samantha, to which she drags her behind a wall and then, they’re out of sight.

Walking calms me down and soon enough I see the door Samantha was talking about. I slide behind it and find myself standing in a small but very nice room, decorated with white wallpapers and wooden floor. Neatly painted plaques hang on the wall and next to a huge window on the wall to my left, a giant bed is sat. I flop down on it and let out a breath I didn’t even know I was holding. I strip down to my underwear, sterile white one I got from the styling team, and slide under the covers. As I fall into a dreamless sleep, the games make their way into my mind, reminding me that nothing is like before.

When I wake up the sun is already rising, and the clock on the wall shows 07.30. I slowly drag myself up to find a t-shirt and pants already at the foot of my bed. The t-shirt fits tightly around my non-muscular chest and the pants are tight, just like my skinny jeans at home, but instead, made of stretch material. We have to get up early for the training sessions. For three days we have public training with the other tributes, then we have a session with the game makers to let them see what we know, and on the same evening, an interview.

“Phil!? It’s breakfast!” Regina yells. I make my way to the living room where Emerald is stuck on the couch, dark circles showing under her eyes. Her lips are dry and her cheeks hollow. I feel bad for her as I sit down at the table.

"Emerald? Do you want to eat?” Samantha calls. I hear she’s trying to make her voice sweet and understanding for the poor girl laying on the couch, not moving. She seems to have emerged into a shock state. I feel sad when I think that she probably won’t last long in the games.
