Burkittsville was nearly an hour away. As they drove out Route 4, they could see lights among the trees. It looked like the aurora borealis but it was brighter and the light seemed to be pulsing.
They came upon Alec's car parked by the side of the road. Rick slowed down as they approached. There was no sign of Alec but there was a body, covered in a sheet, on the grass.
"I'm going to take a look," Rick said.
He gave her his gun and took the shotgun with him.
"Stay here," he said.
Lani got out after him. Rick gave an exasperated sigh, "Don't you ever listen?"
"Apparently not."
Rick crouched down beside the body and pulled back the sheet. It was Trent and his heart was missing.
Lani avoided looking at him. She kept an eye on the lights instead.
A shrill howl emanated from the trees. Lani tightened her grip on the gun. She knew how to fire it but had no idea how good her aim was.
"There are claw marks on his chest. It looks like an animal ripped out his heart," Rick said.
"Where do you think the rest of his friends are?"
"No idea."
Lani shivered, "Do you think what she said is true?"
"Who?"
Lani rolled her eyes, "The slut from the diner. That all hell is breaking loose."
Rick shook his head, "That's ridiculous."
"Still I wouldn't put it past Trent."
"So, what? You think he opened a gateway to hell and it killed him?"
Lani snorted, "Yeah, it does sound a bit Evil Dead, doesn't it?"
Rick covered Trent back up, "There's nothing we can do here. Let's go."
"Help me," a woman screeched.
"That's Shelley," Lani said. Shelley was running through the trees about 100 yards away. Someone or something was chasing her.
Lani ran into help her. Rick followed but fell behind because he couldn't keep up. Lani heard him call her name but she kept running.
She found Shelley on the ground in a clearing. Some kind of snake like creature that appeared to be human on top and snake on the bottom was sliding towards her.
"Hey!" Lani yelled at it. Right before she realized that was a bad idea.
It turned to look at her. It had a human face but snake eyes and a snake tongue that darted out of its mouth.
Lani fired a shot at it but only managed to graze its shoulder.
"Oh crap," she whimpered as it advanced on her. Rick appeared and blasted it with the shotgun.
"Come on," he cried. He grabbed her arm. Lani grabbed Shelley and they ran. They found a hunters blind and locked themselves inside.
"Okay, that was definitely not from around here," Lani said.
"It came out of the pit," Shelley said.
"What pit?"
"It opened up in the woods last night," she replied.
"How?" Rick said.
Shelley didn't meet his gaze, "Trent."
"I told you!" Lani said.
