Dream State- S103

I had dreams, I always have dreams. They're always the same, a destroyed world with a terribly run government. Each time in my dreams I get different aspects of that other world. No matter what they are always terrible, people up on the streets dead or dying, children being gunned down for unknown reasons, anyway you get the jist that this other world is terrible. I never told anyone about my dreams for fear that others would look at me strangely. But that didn't stop me from looking at myself strangely.

***

Gunfire. Screaming. Crying. People running. In a single word chaos. In multiple words Oh my god this world is screwed. I stood in the street as-

I woke up slowly shaking my head to clear my thoughts. My head swam with the echos of my dreams reverberating through my skull. Fear was the only thing keeping me awake right now. Fear that I might fall back into the tight grip of sleep and become prisoner in my own mind.

Many people say you can control every aspect of your dreams. if that's the case I want to meet the person who said that because in my dreams I'm shoved into the passenger seat and forced to watch what's unveiled. Not being able to control my dreams is okay but having to sit through what is being shown to me is something I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy.

I rolled over in bed watching my alarm clock blink 6:30 am. I needed to get up and get ready for work.

I walked into my kitchen and opened my fridge. When I opened it I was greeted with a cold graveyard uninhabited by food.'I might want to get food.' I thought to myself. Turning on my heels I walked to the front door and grabbed my work essentials, shovel, gloves and sunglasses. If you haven't guessed it I am a grower of foods. Specifically I manage four buildings that raise farm animals and grow crops.

I got in my truck and fumbled around for the key. As I stuck it in the ignition and turned it the truck didn't start.

"Huh, that's funny." I said to myself.

I didn't know what to do so I gathered my things into a sinch sack and hopped onto my bike. As I pedaled out onto the road I noticed something was off. It was misty and overcast but that wasn't the thing bothering me. I couldn't place it but I knew something was going to be wrong today. As I rode through town I realized what was wrong, it was silent, even though it was a small town there was always noise. A truck driving down the road, cars honking as they passed their friends' homes, kids playing at the park, always. There was never silence in the town and nobody was outside. Our town wasn't perfect but it usually had nice sunny weather so everyone was outside when they could be so this was just plain weird. Nonetheless I turned of the road and headed to work where hopefully I could get a dose of normalcy.

***

After a thirty minute ride to the farm, which usually took ten, I was starting to sweat on this muggy morning. I walked into the main office and was blasted with heat.

'It is the middle of July,' I thought 'why is the heat on?'

I walked over to turn on the ac but was met with a unresponsive unit. I made a mental note to call Micha the repair man. After dropping my stuff in my office, that I never use, I exited the building out the side door and walked to greenhouse A.

As I approached the semi dome I heard a voice from the inside. On any other day I would have questioned it but this day was just too weird to not expect anything strange. With my truck breaking down, the lack of people in town, and the broken AC, and now someone most likely squatting in the greenhouse. I thought this day couldn't get any weirder but then I walked into the greenhouse and saw someone I thought I would never see ever again.

"What are you doing..." I never finished my sentence because just then I was hit with a wave of pain so forceful it made me double over in pain. I heard a voice shouting out to me but it was too late. I was already gone.

I walk down the hall, following my father. We turn into a large white hallway. When we reach the end of the hallway my father flashes a card in front of a door.

When we pass the door I find a large window on the left wall. I look in the window. I find a man in a chair, thrashing violently.

"Dad? Wants wrong with him?" I ask

"Son, one day you will learn that what we are doing here is better for the world."

He turns and smiles at me, a hint of something I can't quite recongnize flashes in his eyes.

"Is that man okay?"

"Yes, he is fine. This man is doing great things for our world."

"Dad?"

"Yes, son?"

"I want to do great things for our world someday."

"Son, I'm sure you will... I'm sure you will."
