Snake Eyes

140 16 6

A clatter of dice

Trembling hands do roll,

Cast skidding across the marble grid.

Hawk eyes watch

Through shadows, thick,

See what luck your hands have bid

"Over and around they go,

What number will they deign to show?"

The Voodoo priest did sung,

"How much do you long to know?"

O'er strings of beads

Caked in blood they dance.

As you await, with bated breath,

Watching lines drawn in

Lead and bone

Show whether you've cast life, or death.

"Snake eyes!" The Voodoo priest delights,

A serpent's smile bearing pearly whites.

"You lose, my friend," He adds with glee,

"Now blood and bone are mine by rights."

You draw a sharp breath

Through the acrid heat,

What luck to turn so quickly sour.

Dark shadows encroach,

Their grip on your throat.

"Your soul is mine now to devour."

"I'll take your bones to pay your debt,

No gold compares to blood and sweat."

He hisses as sobs fall from trembling lips,

"More fool you who takes this bet!"

A blade would shine

Were the dark not so thick,

Serpent's grin as he stalks his prey.

Play not this game

With the artful Voodoo man,

Or his debt of bones be yours to pay.
