Chapter Three: Warning.

After looking for half an hour, I found the flat that was on the note. It was scary looking up at the large building; it was taller than you'd usually get them and a dull white colour. If I had the choice, I wouldn't stay here. The wind seemed to be picking up in speed and I started to believe I would never be able to wiggle my toes and fingers ever again. As quickly as possible, I walked to the glass main entrance and felt the warmth of the heaters blaze on me. I stood there for a couple moments to get warmer before casually nodding at the guard behind the front desk, and making my way to the elevator.

I pressed the 14th button on the panel and waited patiently for my stop. As I waited, I couldn’t help but be frightened of what laid ahead. I was starting a life on my own; I had no idea what to do first or how I could manage. What would I do for work? How could I have my own place anyway?  How would I support myself?

The elevator doors opened onto a deserted floor with an endless line of doors stretching far on both sides of me and opposite each other. They all looked similar – there was no real hint that anybody lived behind those doors. Looking down at my envelope, there was the numbers ‘27’ so I stared walking down the halls in search of my home.

I stood before the door with the rusting gold digits for a long while. After I stepped through this door, it would be it. This would have to be my home, since my family didn’t want me. With my key, I unlocked the door and entered the apartment.

Inside, was dark though very warm and cosy. I felt the walls for a light switch and after one click the room was filled with light. It was a cool blue room with a white leather sofa and two single versions facing a wide screen T.V on a wooden stand.  On the walls were beautiful paintings. One was what looked like a never ending rainbow spiral. Another was a simple heart, clearly drawn with chalk, with blurred edges and bright flames around it. They were beautiful. There were several doors placed around the room, leading to various other rooms.

I decided to explore my new home so went to the closest door to me. Before I could lay a finger on the door knob, I heard something that made me stop. I wasn’t alone in this apartment.

“I don’t understand why we had to get a roommate!” argued a girl behind the door.

“Rachel, can you afford the rent on this place? The food, electricity or water bill?” said a new voice. “No? Neither can I. She is here to stay and that’s final and I expect you to be nice to her as well.”

“Penny, She doesn’t even have a job and you expect her to help pay, huh? Money doesn’t come from thin air! If it did I wouldn’t be living here!” the first girl, Rachel, shouted at the other.

“Watch your tone kid,” Penny warned.

These girls were arguing about me. I was not going to live in this apartment alone? I wasn’t sure it was a good arrangement yet. Taking a deep breath, I slowly opened the door and saw the two girls, face to red face. One girl had flowing brown hair and dark brown eyes – her features and caramel tone suggested she was probably from the Caribbean. The other girl wore her dirty blonde hair in a bob cut that framed her sharp cheekbones and green eyes.

The Brown haired girl’s expression softened and she backed away from the other girl. She smiled at me and said, “Hello Stranger.”

For one terrifying moment I thought the angels had screwed me over once again and these people would think I was intruding but I remembered it was a casual greeting. By the conversation before, I recognised her voice as Penny. “Hi…Penny…?” I greeted her.
