Why did Papa do that?

I layed on the ground, my face in the dirt. My hands grasping withered blades of grass in hope to somehow dull the pain.

It hurts. But if Papa did it then it must be for a good reason.

My breathing was heavy, and my eyes where brimming with tears, the salty water making them sting.

I heard howling, and suddenly something moist pressed up against my cheek. I heard panting.

I slowly and painfully turned my head to the side. A wolf as white as my hair stood there. She blinked slowly, her eyes where blue and translucent.

The wolf rolled me over so that I was looking straight up at the sky. The breeze rolled over my bare chest. There where more wolfs than I could count.

But then, I could barely count to thirty.

My mind struggled to grasp the situation.

Should I scream? Run? Play dead?

The wolf spoke to me with her eyes, and before I knew it I was climbing onto her back. The wolf nuzzled me and her eyes seemed to smile. And then, with a howl, we where off. I didn't know where to, but I felt safe. Even though Papa had told me to stay away from wolfs, that they where wild dogs with 'no morals'. What where morals? I had no idea what that word meant, but something told me that whatever it was it was something important.

Papa will be mad, I thought. He'll wonder where I 've been.

We stopped infront of a small cave, rain splattering down and hurting my back. I decided that I should ignore the stinging sensation on my back and focus on the situation I waas currently in.

The white wolf set my down on a small pile of hay. I touched it and drew my hand back.

"Is it really okay if I sleep on the hay?" I looked up at the white she-wolf with wide eyes. Papa and Mama punished me if I dared sleep, or even lay down, on anything but the cold hard stone floor of my 'room'.

The she-wolf nodded and proceded to lightly push my down onto the makeshift bed. A small ash-grey pup popped up from under the soggy hay.

It let out a small yip of excitement and proceeded to climb on my stomach.

I cringed, since I didn't have a shirt to protect me from its sharp claws and my stab wounds had not yet begun to heal.

The small pup let out a whimper, giving me a look of guilt. I shook my head and smiled.

"Is it okay if I call you Mist?" It let out another yip of excitement and then proceeded to lick my wounds.

I soon fell asleep and was woken up the next morning next to a warm, fluffy wolf.

"Mama...?" I asked groggilly.

The white wolf's eyes smiled at me again.
