Amelia sighed, shouldering her bag. It was her first day back at school since her grandmothers funeral, and already she had counted three roadkill, two crows picking at a dead animal, and one missing cat sign. She looked on the bright side of life. Her blonde hair fell in front of her eyes, and she pushed it back, only to have it fall again. Once again, she pushed it back, tucking it behind her ear. It stayed. She looked forward and saw her school, and out came another sigh.
Belle held her text book tight to her chest, not meeting the eyes of her classmates. They were laughing at her, and all because of one stupid mistake. She mentally kicked herself.
"Alright class, that's enough. Belle simply forgot her book. That's nothing to laugh about." Mrs. Acosta looked disapprovingly at her class.
"I'm sorry Mrs. Acosta." Belle mumbled
"You're fine. We're just working on the worksheet." She smiled reassuringly. Belle took her seat and sighed, she hated front row seats. Starting on her work, she opened her textbook, barely registering the entrance of the girl.
"Sorry I'm late Mrs. Acosta, I had to go to the office." Amelia said tiredly.
"That's fine, I actually wasn't aware you were back today." Mrs. Acosta smiled, "Glad to have you back!" She pointed to a seat near the back, "That'll be your seat, next to Ryan."
"Thank you." Was Amelia's quiet response. Belle looked up, only now realizing her presence. She smiled at Amelia, after all, she liked to think that they were friends. Amelia didn't even register the gesture, her half-asleep mind only just managing to keep her from falling. Though she felt hurt, Belle was used to being ignored, and continued on her work. Amelia sat down, pulling out her math book. Mrs. Acosta walked up to her, handing her a few papers.
"These are the only papers I need you to complete, and you need to make up a test. Other than that, I'll exempt you from that work." She glanced down at the math book, "Also... It's English class."
Amelia took the papers and sighed, "Thank you, my mind isn't working today."
"Yeah, we noticed." The boy next to her smirked.
"Ryan, that was unnecessary." Mrs. Acosta returned to her desk, as Amelia signed go to hell at Ryan.
Ryan simply smirked and turned back to his work. Amelia stared down at her papers, mentally groaning. She looked up at the clock, ten minutes till the end of class. It was barely worth starting work, so instead she put her papers back in her backpack and read her book until the bell rang.
Belle closed her book, hastily shoving her things into her bag.
"Hey Belle." Amelia smiled and patted her friend on the back.
"Hi... um... how was... never mind." Belle looked down and flushed in embarrassment
"It was good actually, it was a fitting funeral for her." Amelia's smile faded, "See ya in fifth hour!" She smiled and walked out, leaving Belle to pack her things.
Belle looked up, silently cursing herself.
"You look a bit flustered Belle." Mrs. Acosta attempted to hide the grin spreading across her face.
"I-I... that's not fair!" Belle smiled, "Out of curiosity... what do you mean by that?"
"Never mind, you'd better get to class." Mrs. Acosta gave a playful shooing motion and Belle all but ran out the room.
