She stared across the bleak gray yard. Wishing she was anywhere but here, the orphanage, learning what? how to be obedient, and how to cook, clean and be a good servant. But of course that was all she needed to learn because that was all she was allowed to be, all she could ever be.
Waiting for the morning break to be over she wandered across to the wall and the iron door that stood there, for no apparent purpose other than to remind the orphans that freedom was so close but they would never reach it. Reaching out to touch it she remembered the times she had kicked and punched it trying to find a way out. but not this time, today she thoughtfully traced her fingers along the door. Wondering what her life would have been like if her father had not fled when her mother died leaving her- Violet Lilith- an abandoned baby barely a year old. What life was beyond the cold stone wall, what could she have been? What could she have achieved?
Focusing back on the door Violet realized that where her fingers had touched the wall the solid iron had transformed into little pathways of blue. Terrified of the consequences she hastily drew her hand back, but instead of remaining blue patches on a dull iron door, the pathways began to move, intertwining to create a completely new design. The door was beautiful, it looked like a morning sky, frozen in time. Violet gasped, captivated by the magical transformation and appearance, Pulling on the handle she expected the door to remain locked but this time it opened and Violet stepped inside.
