Kelly said he believed me but he needed to be sure. I didn't mind I knew he would want proof. Kelly walked me out of the room and went to ask his boss for an hour to himself. Next thing I knew Kelly was coming my way. We sat silently in his truck on the way to the hospital. Neither of us spoke until we were at the hospital and Kelly says "I'll be right back stay here" I just nodded my head. Where else would I go?
Kelly comes back with a tall man and short women both with dark hair. They lead us to a room having me sit on the bed Kelly in the chair.
"Jessica I'm Dr.Halstead I'm a friend of Kelly's you can call me Will and this is my partner Dr.Manning"
"You can call me Nat." I nodded and stuck my hand out for them to shake.
"Now Jessica"
I interrupted him " please call me Jessie"
"Ok Jessie" Will continued " We are going to take a check swab from you and Kelly and run it in our lab does that sound okay"
I nodded not sure of what else to do. Nat took a large qtip out of the draw and had me open my mouth. she did the same with Kelly. She tried making some friendly conversation. "so Jessie how old are you?" With that question Kelly's eyes lit up realizing he himself never asked these questions.
"I'm 8" I answered
Will came back into the room with the test results in hand. I looked up, shaking, hoping. hoping my 'dad' will accept me, hoping I'm not sent to the foster home like my brother, hoping if my 'dad' takes me in maybe he'll take my older brother too.
"are you guys ready for the results?" We all just stood there until Kelly said " Will what are you waiting for give us the damn results." I couldn't help but laugh. Will looked at the paper then at Kelly then me then back to Kelly. "Congratulations it's a girl."
