"You still call your mom mommy?" He laughed as we were backing out of my driveway. "Yes. Does what I call my mother by concern your need to be so judgmental?" I shot back. "No. It's just kind of funny considering you're in high school and all." "Meh I saw your input coming from a mile away. SO unoriginal" I smiled and looked out my window at the trees. "So, I'm sure you knew this was coming, but what's up with your eyes, like I've heard rumors and crap, but I never believed it before. Not to be rude or anything." He was driving with one hand on the wheel a little too slowly for my preference. "They've always done it. I don't really know why." He seemed to be pleased enough with that answer to leave it alone. "Want to get anything to eat before we head to hell?" I could tell when he looked over even when I was daydreaming out of my window. "Were you planning on getting anything?" I brought myself back into the car mentally before looking to him. "I'm kinda hungry. And I could go for a milkshake. You're a coffee drinker right?" We were about to pull into our local cafe. "Yeah, but I'm good. Thanks though." He shot me a smile before going inside. I turned up the radio and turned it to a classic rock station. It wasn't long before he came back out. He got me a coffee anyway. "I know you said you didn't want anything, but I felt rude so I got us each a cinnamon roll and you a coffee." I gave him a dirty look before taking the coffee from him so he could get in the car. "And we're off like a speeding hurd of turtles." He shot me a look that expressed how dumbfounded he truly was by my statement. "You don't have to understand. Merely accept it." I smiled knowing that phrase will be on my grave. "You just enjoy making me confuzzled." I laughed thinking back to fourth grade when I used to say that at least 100 times a day. "You're such a rip off. That's totally my saying." He shrugged "Better than just being lame like you." I looked over knowing he was teasing me. I slapped his arm playfully. "I'm not lame! I have friends you know." He laughed giving me a questioning look. "Do you? I've never seen you go out in person or even pictures online." I let out a deep breath. "I know. I am pretty lame... Could be worse though." I looked over for him to know I was totally messing with him. "I could have your face." I took a drink of my coffee feeling victorious over my petty attempt at some kind of payback. "Hey how much do I owe you?" I said realizing he paid for me. "What?" He glanced over seeing the coffee immediately. "Oh don't worry about it. I have to prove I'm a gentleman in more ways than one." I stuck my tongue out at him in disapproval. "Why thank you Matty, but I am a young independent woman who can very well pay for herself." "I understand this Miss Grey and I have complete and utter faith in you as an individual, but it is the polite thing to do, and I figured if I would want this to happen again I would want to prove to you that I'm worth dealing with." We had just gotten to the school, and I could already see a few people staring in our direction. "Ha. ha. Look at you acting like you have a brain." I opened the car door intending to get out. "Amity?" I turned back around to show I was listening. "Since sixth grade? Really?" I rolled my eyes and stepped out of the car grabbing my bag and tossing it over my shoulder. "Thanks for the ride, Matty." "No problem Grey. Hey you wanna sit with me at lunch?" I was a bit taken aback by the question. No one had asked me to sit with them, especially a boy, since sixth grade. "I'll think about it." I smiled and headed to my first hour class feeling the slightest bit ok.
