≪ LOVERS OF THE WAR ≫
requested by my twin Hidaya
this takes place during 1939,
which is why it's old fashioned"I'm sweating, Daddy!" Maya Hart—soon to be Friar—told her father as she walked the last pair of bridesmaids and groomsmen walk down the isle. "Ladies don't sweat."
Shawn looked down at his daughter, letting out a low chuckle as he said, "Don't worry, darling. Mr. Friar loves you, does he not?"
"Oh, yes," she sighed. "But this is my wedding day! I'm terrified."
Neither of them got the chance to say another word before everyone in the church stood, indicating that it was finally their turn to walk down the isle. Maya sighed heavily as she bit her lip, slowly walking along Shawn down the center of the pews towards the alter where Lucas Friar and the pastor stood. She let her blue eyes wander to her soon-to-be husband, taking in his expression— he looked awestruck, staring at Maya with widened emerald eyes and a slack jaw.
Maya held back her smile as she and Shawn approached the alter, Lucas not being able to take his eyes off of the petite blonde woman. She supposed she owed Riley a thank you for telling her not to let Lucas see the wedding dress before the day of the actual ceremony— it sure did work a lot better that way. The blonde looked down at her feet to avoid feeling too happy about Lucas' expression.
Shawn placed a kiss against Maya's cheek, unhooking their arms as he went to go sit down beside Maya's mother Katy Hart on the first pew. Maya let out a sigh, carefully climbing the two steps up to the alter to stand directly in front of Lucas, smiling eagerly at her husband-to-be. She'd never been so excited in her life.
"We are gathered here today to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony," the pastor said, then turning to Lucas. "Do you, Lucas, take thou Maya, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, as long as you both shall live?"
"I do," Lucas Friar said almost instantly, not being able to take his eyes off of the beautiful young woman standing in front of him.
The pastor turned to the blonde beauty then, proceeding to repeat nearly the same exact thing. "Do you, Maya, take thou Lucas, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, as long as you both shall live?"
Maya's answer was as immediate as her soon to be husband's— "I do."
"Then, by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the pastor said, "you may now kiss the bride."
He didn't have to tell them twice. Lucas lifted Maya's veil over her head, revealing her beautiful features to him even more, an excited smile on her face. He sent her one in return, and that was the last thing she saw before he leaned down, connecting their lips together to finally deem them a married couple.
The crowd cheered as Lucas dipped his bride, Maya's arms wrapped around his neck. She'd been waiting for this day since he proposed eight months ago, and now that it was finally here, she couldn't be happier. They were both at their happiest when they were together.
They knew they were always going to be with each other.

A month had passed since Maya and Lucas' wedding. They were as happy as they could possibly be, they were so in love. Even though they'd only been married a month, they had been talking about starting a family together— not yet, of course, but eventually.
Maya was home alone today. Lucas had been called somewhere by a friend of his—Charlie—who was supposedly an army general for America. The blonde beauty didn't mind that her husband was off with his friend; she just wished Riley was able to come over, but as it turned out, she was busy. So, Maya was home by herself.
She was reading a book, sitting curled up on the couch with the Jane Austen novel open on her lap. It wasn't exactly the most exciting thing to be doing at the moment, but it was something, at least. Something was better than nothing, Maya always said.
Truth be told, she'd rather have Lucas here— at least then, they'd be able to talk and laugh and cuddle on the couch. Sitting down and reading in an empty house was not something Maya was very fond of, but it was better than sitting down and staring at a wall in an empty house.
She wondered what Lucas and Charlie could be up to. It seemed quite urgent, so there was no way it could be just a friendly meeting, right? Maya tried to keep herself from worrying in order to be able to concentrate on her book, but it wasn't working very well. For starters, she wasn't a big fan of reading, and she was also worried.
What was wrong with her husband?
Almost as if on cue, the door busted open, causing Maya to jump. Her ocean eyes snapped to the doorway, where she found a frantic looking Lucas standing, emerald eyes as wide as they could be. The petite blonde woman frowned, closing her book as she stood from the couch.
"Lucas," she breathed, placing a hand on his cheek when she approached him, "what's wrong?"
He didn't respond, instead placing his hand against the back of her neck to pull her into a breathtaking kiss. She gasped, leaving her hand on his cheek and bringing the other one up so both hands were caressing his face as he held her tightly against his body, seemingly not wanting to let her go. It seemed like something was wrong, but Maya was too deep into the kiss to think about that at the moment.
They turned around, her back hitting the wall as she tangled her hands in his hair. It was such a passionate kiss— quite possibly the most passionate one they'd ever had in their relationship. Maya didn't know why, but she couldn't help but feel like a meteor was about to come crashing down onto her world.
Lucas attempted to deepen the kiss, but Maya—who was desperate for answers—wouldn't let him. She detached their lips, the sounds of their heavy breathing mixing together as they stared deeply at each other. Lucas looked broken, like his entire life had just come crumbling down, and Maya hated the horrible feeling in her stomach upon seeing him like that.
"Lucas," she whispered carefully, squeezing her eyes closed as she placed her hands on his chest. "What's the matter?"
He looked down at the blonde beauty with a horrified expression, his bottom lip seemingly quivering. Maya had no idea what he was thinking or even what the news had been saying about anything, but she knew that whatever her husband was going to tell her was going to be terrible.
"World War II was just declared," he told her, his voice cracking as tears began to pour from his eyes. "I have to go, Maya. I have to fight."
And just like that, their forever was cut entirely too short.
