Ring! Ring! I rushed out of bed to pick up the landline. It was an early morning, and school started in two hours.
"Watch the news." It was Elizabeth.
"Why?" I asked, in my pajamas.
"Just because." Okay then. I put the phone down. I ran downstairs, turned on the TV, and switched to the news channel. They were showing pictures of a boy, but he looked strikingly familiar.
Finally, I recognized who it was.
"A student of Beachside Middle School, Isamu Hayashimo, was found dead yesterday at 4:26pm at Beachside Middle School. He was found dead in the boy's bathroom by one of the school's janitors." I could feel my jaw drop.
"I'm here with Mr. Hudd, the founder of Isamu's dead body. Hudd, tell us about the situation." The interviewer handed the microphone to him.
"Well," the janitor said nervously, "it was just any normal afternoon in Beachside. It was my duty to clean the boy's bathroom at the time. I went inside and cleaned all the stalls, but one wasn't opening. I asked to see if anyone was in there, and there was no reply. I crawled under the stall only to see a student's dead body. I called the administrators and things just went off from there." The interviewer switched the microphone back to him.
"Were you surprised at what you saw?" he asked.
"Of course I was!" exclaimed the old man, "I nearly screamed!" It then transitioned back to the news reporter.
"Luckily, the school's cameras were rolling and we found some breathtaking footage. Isamu was staying after for science tutoring, he was seen walking in the hallways but was then attacked by a man who appeared to be wearing a Kermit The Frog mask. The Muppet Man then left out of sight and Isamu rushed to the bathroom as quick as possible, who was also then out of sight." The news then showed the footage. They were right. The attacker was wearing the scathingly green mask.
"Police are doing their best to discover who this Muppet Man is, until then we shall mourn the loss of Isamu and continue to have a normal school day at Beachside Middle School." I let out an annoyed moan. Seriously??!!! Are they going to let us go to school while these mysterious events keep happening?! The death of Isamu, regardless of the distance and strangeness between us, brought me to despair. I went and texted Elizabeth.
OMG! I said
I know right! She replied. Man this is messed up! Why are they making us go to school?! I can't believe Isamu is dead.....
Exactly! Adrianna is gonna freak! I said.
Well, I gotta go! She said.
Okay....see you at school. I said. I dressed up and ate some breakfast. My older sister, Katrina woke up. I told her the news.
"Oh my God, what?!" She exclaimed.
"Yeah, It's crazy." I replied with a sad tone. Guilt stabbed me by the heart, I wouldn't have joked about Isamu if I only knew these things would happen, but I guess that's why we should never joke anyone in the first place. After all, tomorrow wasn't promised, not even to the safest and richest soul out there. Katrina and I rode the bus to school. Then we arrived to Beachside. Stepping off the bus, I saw a swarm of angry students. I saw Nancy and ran up to catch to her.
"Did you see the news?!" I asked impatiently.
"Of course I did!" Nancy said with big eyes. Why wouldn't she? These things spread like wildfire. "I can't believe Isamu died!"
"Neither can I." We talked as we entered the building. "Nancy...Don't you think something is up?! With all these weird things happening....?" My mind then flash backed to that imagined sleepover. Did that have anything to do with it? "I mean, I should have told you this earlier, but that sleepover I thought we had, some weird things happened in it."
"What do you mean?" Nancy inquired. I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell her just yet.
"Never mind." Trying to switch the topic, I redirected to my other point. "But still, weird things are happening. This doesn't make any sense!" Nancy just looked at me, curious.
"Hey, maybe it's just all a coincidence." Oh great. This is how all the horror movies start. I make my way to my locker and I'm greeted by Adrianna's friendly smile.
"Caaaarrrmen!" she yelled. Her expression then changed to a one of seriousness. "Did you hear? Isamu is dead!"
"Of course I heard, Adrianna!" I said back. "It's not smart that they're making us go to school with this case unsolved. We should be at home," I lectured angrily. "The Muppet Man could be anywhere..."
"Muppet Man?" Adrianna questioned.
"Isamu's killer." I saw Elizabeth arrive to her locker, which was right next to me.
"I have a pocket knife and some pepper spray with me. My Mom is not letting me roam the school unarmed with a killer on the loose." Elizabeth spoke with the voice of someone wise, unlike our city's school board. An exhilarating thought entered my head. I quickly did my locker business and ran to Mr.Beanoot's room.
"Mr.Beanoot! I have a question!" He nodded. "Isn't this unsafe for the school to practice a normal school day when there's a killer on the loose, plus with our lunches being *mysteriously* drugged?" I asked impatiently.
"I have to agree with you there, but there wasn't any evidence that a murderer drugged the school's lunches." Wait a minute. That's not what I asked.
"What?" I said nervously. "That's not what I asked."
"Oh, well sorry." he said casually.
"Do you think that's what happened?" I asked.
"It could of, but I don't know. The only way I can know," he looked at me straight in the eye, "is if I saw the school's footages. But as a teacher of the school, I'm not given the right to see that."
"Who does?" I asked.
"The office."
"Where in the office?"
"Don't know." I paused for a second.
"Well either way, if it did happen, wouldn't the school do anything about it? Like raise security? Or at least make sure it wasn't anybody in the building?"
"Exactly" he said. "Unless something else could've happened."
"Like what?"
"The footage could have been deleted."
