Chapter 1
"Then...it was gone!" Tessa's friend, Emily said as she ended her story. "That's the myth of the disappearing police station."
"Really?" Tessa questioned. "I don't think a police station can disappear mysteriously. It's like what...50 square feet? It's not that hard to track."
"Then how do you explain that piece of empty land over there?" Emily explained showing the empty lot across the street.
"Okay, okay..." Tessa said with an eye-roll. DING! Tessa's phone ringed signaling that there was a text sent to her. "Oh, it's my mom. Apparently there's something wrong at home." Tessa stood up gathering her books. "Uh...see you later."
As Tessa left Emily, she worried as to what was wrong. Last time this happened, her grandma died. She was at the park when her mom texted 'Something is wrong. Please come quick.' That was the exact thing her mom texted her now. She arrived at the front of her house and rang the doorbell. Her mom opened the door sobbing.
"Oh, Tessa!" Her mom, Kiera, ran to Tessa to embrace her in a hug. "He...he...he's...gone!"
"Who mom? Who's gone?"
"Dad! He's gone!" Kiera said sobbing more. "I came home from work this afternoon and I...I just...here!" Kiera shoved a piece of paper into Tessa's hand. It was crumpled and golden-yellow. Tessa read the note:
Kiera and Tessa,
I apologize for my disappearance, I am relieved that I am able to write you this note. They are very scary. I am doing this to keep you both safe. I love you very much.
Eric
Tears formed in Tessa's eyes as she saw her fathers messy hand writing. So many questions formed in her mind. Why is he relieved to write the note? Who are they? Why are they scary? Why is he doing this to keep us safe? Where is he? Why? Why? Why?
"I...I am going to look for him," she told her mom "I'm going to find him."
"No!" Kiera yelled jumping from the couch. "I lost him...I'm not losing you...now, sit!"
"I'm finding him, my mind is made up."
"You are going to listen to me, or you are not living under this roof!"
"Fine! I'll leave!" Tessa ran to the door. Kiera held her arm, a strong hold, not letting her leave. "I'm finding him, no matter what I go through.'' With that Tessa shook off her mom's hold and left the house.
