Prologue

“We may or may not have to get a creeper van,” Mandy Albright declared as she surveyed the luggage belonging to four very different girls with four very different personalities.

“I don’t want to be seen in one of those! This is all of your stuff anyway,” Tiffany Escher said with a wrinkle of her nose.

“Oh, don’t even talk! You’ve got 6 bags compared to my 4. And one of them is my guitar anyway!”

Although the girls had met only 3 and half hours ago, they were already acting like they had known each other forever.

“Guys, come on. We’re going to be spending a lot of time together and me and Andie are not going to sit listening to you two bicker all the time,” the ever-rational Joanna Gillespie butted in. The soft-spoken Andie Carmichael blushed at the mention of her name.

The girls stood in the driveway of Mandy’s cousin’s house. All of their luggage was dumped by their feet and they were trying to decide which car they wanted to take for their road trip to L.A.

Mandy’s cousin, Edwin, had been generous enough to let them borrow one of his three cars, if only for a small fee. Hey, it beat paying for plane tickets.

“That’s the only car that will fit all of this,” Mandy said pointing lamely at the white van with more than a few dings and scratches.

Tiffany sighed at the obvious fact that they would have to go against everything she stood for. All her life she had been pampered and spoiled. She grew up in a huge complex on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, constantly surrounded by people just like her. She had surprised herself when she agreed to go on a week-long road trip with 3 complete strangers. Now she was stuck hauling her own luggage into the back of a van that reeked of cigarettes and Mexican food. While in heels. She just kept reminding herself that this was all for Conrad Hanes. It’s all for Conrad.

Mandy sighed as she watched the snotty Tiffany lug her bags into the back of the van. Hmm, I wonder how she can stand it without someone doing it for her, she thought. She really hoped that she would not have to listen her bitch all the time. Joanna seemed like a pretty nice girl, and so did Andie, although she rarely talked. She hoped she could change that. She would be spending a week with these girls and if she was going to be listening to Tiffany complain about not having 24/7 access to a spa service or hearing complete silence from Andie, this was not going to be worth it. No, it will be worth it. It’s all for Conrad.

Joanna watched Mandy watching Tiffany, and she stifled a giggle. She was really good at reading people and she could tell that neither Tiffany nor Mandy seemed very excited to be going on this trip with each other, even though Mandy organized the whole thing. She wasn’t even sure why Andie was here; she looked so out of her element. Oh, well, she’d have to loosen her up. After all, she was a very expressive person; she loved art. She couldn’t help but think what a wild ride this would be, trying to be the mediator between Tiffany and Mandy and trying to include Andie. But it’s not like she didn’t do the same thing with her 3 siblings on a daily basis. Oh, well. It’s all for Conrad.

Andie stood off to the side, watching the three girls she’d be spending a week with. She would be lying if she said she hadn’t thought about backing out more than a few times. She had no idea what she had been thinking when she agreed to this. She had always tried her hardest to be invisible. After school she would go home to her laptop and update her Conrad Hanes fan site. It was the only thing she truly loved to do; the reason she decided to go on this trip in the first place. It’s all for Conrad.
