Summary: Axel, a German Shepherd, started his life in a shelter, and thought he would spend his whole life there. Little does he know that he gets pulled into a tough, merciless world where only the strongest canines survive. I know, sucky summary, but I don't want to give EVERYTHING away!
A/N: Hey guys, this is my first EVER Wattpad story so I hope you guys enjoy it! I'd appreciate any types of critique in the comments if you guys post any. If you comment any questions, I'll try to get to you! And updates every Friday by 3:00 PM! Alright, on with the story!
All around me, the other dogs started barking. That must mean someone’s coming! I started wagging my tail so I looked happier than I really was. Being adopted is every shelter dog’s dream; including mine. My mother had given birth to me (Ajax), Brix, Claudia, Daniel, and Eve on a cold, rainy day. Two days later, she died. We stayed on the streets until we were hustled into a warm place. When I first opened my eyes, I saw that only Brix and Eve were still with me. We were eventually transferred to a shelter, where I met my new friend Jasper the black Lab. In the shelter, the boy dogs and the girl dogs are on separate sides, so I can’t really get Eve’s attention very well. Brix is the head honcho of our area, and is a little bigger than me. He can get anyone’s attention just by barking once. A shadow fell across the kennel walls, and everyone went crazy.
“Do you have any German Shepherds?” asked a loud voice from around the corner. Ethan, one of the guys who work here, replied, “Yes, we have three, but only one will work for you. One is in the animal hospital, and one is slated for the police, John.”
“Well, could I see him Ethan? I think I’d like to adopt today”, an annoyed John wanted to know. “Of course, here sir, it’s the smaller one”, Ethan said as he opened my kennel door. I picked up scents from the man Ethan called John: impatience and greed. I shook my head, confused. Jasper took one look at me and sighed.
“I guess you’re gonna be adopted hmm, Ajax”, he half whispered to himself. Don’t worry, I won’t forget you, and I know you’ll never forget me.” There was nothing I could say to Jasper, since at that moment Ethan hauled me out of the kennel and put a leash on me. If you were going to be adopted, whoever wanted to have to “inspect” you. If you were up to their standards, you got a couple of shots and went home with the people. John ran his fingers through my fur, making it rippled like the ocean’s waves. He opened my mouth to see my teeth and he was not disappointed; my canines are very large.
“He has a good coat, and his teeth are pretty good”, John exclaimed. “I’ll take him!”
Ethan outfitted me with a microchip and two shots. John had apparently brought along a chain leash and matching collar. He led me out the front door as Ethan waved good-bye. John’s car was a pickup truck, but I can’t tell what color it is; because dogs are colorblind. He let me hop into the passenger seat, and he turned the radio to Bruce Springsteen. I stuck my head out the open window and let the wind rush across my face. In only a short time, we were out in the country; and a farmhouse was ahead. John stopped the truck and we got out to head towards to the front door. John said to me, “Ajax, life is going to be pretty different for you, ya know? You’re going to be making new friends in a couple of weeks. But first, we’re gonna test you.”
