~Chapter Two~
I walked down the hallway slowly, clutching my books and binders tightly. Time seemed to slow down, and the hallway seemed to get longer and longer, no matter how far I walked. It never ended. People were staring. I looked down, and checked to make sure I hadn’t forgotten to put on pants. Nope, I’ve got everything. I lifted my head back up. People were still staring. Girls glared at me in disgust. Guys glared at me in even more disgust.
I finally reached my locker. The people who were near it moved away once I approached. I furrowed my eyebrows. What is going on?
Just then, my best friend Melanie, or Mel, came up to me, approaching me seemingly carefully. “Hey.”
“Hey,” she replied, looking to the ground.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, shoving my stuff into the locker. “Why is everyone looking at me?”
“Look,” she started, pulling me away from my locker and around the corner, into a less populated hall. Still, everyone stared. “I heard about what happened last week with Spencer. In the hallway.”
“What does he have to do with this?” I asked, confusion clear in my voice.
“He may have said a few things about you.” She mumbled, her eyes trained on the ground. My mouth parted, and I felt my eyes go wide.
“W-what kind of things?” I asked shakily. Mel muttered something incoherent, my ears strained to hear. “What, Mel? Tell me.”“He said that you have HIV,” she said, louder this time.
Time seemed to stop. My eyes went wide, my mouth wide open. I was shocked. I was shocked that Spencer would do something like this to me. He spread a rumor about me that was completely untrue. He wouldn’t even know that, we never went all the way.
“What?” I whispered, dumbfounded.
Mel looked at me with sympathetic eyes. “Look, Jules. I really didn’t want to be the to tell you, but I just had to.”
“I understand,” I told her, nodding a little. A new feeling came over me. Fury. I was absolutely furious that Spencer would say such a thing about me. Who did he think he was? Spreading nasty rumors about me.
In a rushed decision, I turned around, and stomped away, leaving Mel behind. I marched all the way to Spencer’s locker. There he was. I walked right up to the locker door, raised my hand, and slammed it shut with as much force as possible, almost succeeding in hitting Spencer right in the nose.
“What the fuck,” he muttered, staring with wide eyes at his locker door. His gaze then turned to me. The only thing he did was grunt and turn back to his locker, twisting the lock around to reopen it. “Huh.”
“God dammit, Spencer!” I shouted, attracting attention from the people in the hallway. Once the realized it was me, they scoffed in disgust, but continued to stare.
“What the fuck are you doing?” He snapped, whipping his head around to look at me.
“You know damn well what I’m doing. Who do you think you are?! Spreading rumors like that about me!” I screamed, tears brimming my eyes. Never in my entire 17 years had someone treated me this poorly. It was like I was a cigarette, he used me for a little while until I burnt out and he got bored, then he threw me on the ground and stomped all over me.
“Well, you shouldn’t have been a fucking bitch and broken up with me.” He spat.
I looked at him, incredulous, one single tear leaking out of my eye. “You’re such an asshole! You dated me for a bet, of course I was going to break up with you when I found out! Now you‘ve practically ruined my life at school! No one will look at me, talk to me. You‘re heartless, you pig.”
Spencer laughed bitterly. “Not everything in life is rainbows and butterflies, Jules. Grow a backbone and stop your whining.”
“You are a monster,” I said darkly, clenching and unclenching my fists. “And I told you not to call me that.”
“Fine then,” Spencer told me, backing away slowly. “Have fun distinguishing these rumors, Julie. I’ve got the whole school wrapped around my finger.”
That’s all he said before turning on his heel and stalking off down the hallway. I averted my eyes from where he once stood, looking anywhere but there. I closed my eyes, and counted to ten. One, I thought. Two, three, four…
“Hey, are you okay?” My eyes fluttered open. He was standing in front of me.
“Uh. Y-yeah, I’m fine.” I told him, lying easily. Why am I stuttering? Why does he have this effect on me?
Today he was wearing an AC DC muscle shirt and black skinny jeans with white high top converse covering his feet. He wore his usual glasses and his little curls flopped over his forehead like always.
“Are you sure?” Ashton asked. I nodded. “Julie, right?”
I nodded again. He stuck out his hand, waiting for me to shake it. “Hi, I’m Ashton Irwin.”
I shook his hand shyly. “Julie Hill. But you can call me Jules.”
