Girl Almighty
"I always trusted you with the aux cord," I laughed as I held it up to Roman who was complaining about the dead silence we'd been seated in for the past five minutes. "Take the damn cord and play some music Roman!"
"Fine, I'll take it." The cord was torn from my grip and I looked over at him, he was searching for something to play.
"Put the damn music on shuffle Roman, and leave it on the first song that comes on. It's me you're with, not some bitch who will judge you based on your music taste." I scoffed, braking as a red light appeared. Roman sighed next to me before a song began playing through the speakers, and a large grin broke my lips. "You've got to be fucking kidding me!"
One Direction, a song off their second-to-last album, blared through my speakers. I looked over to Roman who was smiling like an idiot, nodding his head confidently. I'd shown Roman One Direction our last year of high school, when they started becoming popular in America and we would listen to them nonstop; after we broke up I thought he wouldn't like them anymore.
"You have all their albums?" My voice was at a higher octave and I could feel my idiotic smile grow bigger. I turned into a parking spot in front of my favorite doughnut shop and looked over at Roman who was singing along with the song.
"Stella, of course! What? Did you think I'd stop listening to them because we broke up?"
My heart rate decreased from the mention of our break up, "Actually, yeah. I did." Roman turned the dial to the left as he stared at me, my skin burned and instead of opening my mouth once more I pulled my keys from the ignition and exited the car.
The air was crisp, something I was used to from the one year I smoked a cigarette every morning. I rushed into the warmth of the shop and proceeded to the counter, leaving Roman following in a confused trail. I ordered a dozen doughnuts and a coffee, but also a doughnut for myself to enjoy so I wouldn't have to go home right away. "Roman, would you like anything?"
"I'll buy it." His voice was stern and it reminded me of the times he would get mad at me for speaking to guy friends without his consent.
"I asked you if you'd like anything, not if you were going to buy anything." I turned a bit to get a look at him, he was sitting at one of the tables, staring at his phone. Quickly, I turned as I rolled my eyes and told the petite lady that everything I had would be it. I paid for everything and walked to the table Roman sat at, as I was about to sit he got up right away to order his breakfast.
Knowing it would be a bad idea, I texted Cynthia about how weird he was being, forgetting to tell her that he'd came over when her and I were on the phone the night before. As I waited for a reply I took the top off my styrofoam coffee cup to take a sip, instantly regretting it as I sucked in cold air to try and soothe the burn it left my tongue. Roman sat down quietly as I continued sucking in air, looking at me like I was crazy before opening his white bag to take his doughnut out.
During our fifteen minutes of eating Roman's phone constantly kept vibrating on the table, annoying me every time. Before I could even get a glimpse of his screen he had it in his hand, replying back to whoever it was. I didn't care much though, I couldn't really–he wasn't mine anymore, so there was nothing I could do if he was talking to somebody else. Cynthia's name lit up my screen followed by increasing numbers, I quickly took my phone in hand to read what she had to say.
"Who are you texting?" Roman asked in his annoying teasing voice.
"Why should it matter to you?" I bit, taking another sip of coffee.
