The rain fell relentlessly , making the mid-August atmosphere even colder than it was before. Natalie pulled her jacket closer, hoping to find any warmth in its thin fabric. Sighing, she tried distracting herself by looking out the car window. The moisture in the air had already condensed and fogged most of the glass panel but she could still see bits of the world outside. There were people. Each wearing rain-protection gear; each had umbrellas in hand. Some were hurrying-probably to work- and some were mostly parents bringing their kids to school. A particular pair caught her eye. A girl, around Natalie's age, threw a tantrum right there on the side walk. The little girl was pointing at her pink blouse and she instantly realized that the girl was actually complaining about a mud stain at the hem. A woman, probably her mother, started arguing that it wasn't that big of deal. At the sight of the schism, Natalie reached out for her own mother's hand.
"What's wrong Natty?" she heard her say. Nathalie looked up at her mother's dazzling ember eyes and shook her head.
"It's nothing." she answered, her voice barely audible. Lin Karashima was a fragile looking woman. With her thin build and soft features, it looked like she could break at any moment, like a sculpture made of glass that was bound to shatter with just one touch. This reason specifically, Natalie rarely would say anything that would alarm her.
"Are you nervous about your new school sweetie?"
Natalie shook her head again. "It's nothing mom, really." She didn't want to worry her mother just because she saw another girl fighting with hers. Her parents almost never got mad at her. So to see something like that, was quite disturbing.
"We're almost there Ma'am." the driver said, looking at them through the rearview mirror.
"Alright." Lin smiled gratefully and carefully helped her daughter into a yellow plastic raincoat.
The second Natalie opened the door, the stingy smell of petrichor wafted up her nose and made her wince. She always hated that smell. It reminded her of funerals. Shaking her head in disgust, she quickly got out of the vehicle and waited as her mother came out with a silver umbrella at hand. She smiled at her daughter and took her hand in hers.
"You ready Natty?" she asked. Nathalie knew it was a rhetorical question since she knew her mother already had an answer. With a brief nod, they made their way to the school's multi-colored gates.
"Welcome!" A cheerful young woman-probably in her mid twenties- greeted as they arrived in front of the entrance. The woman, Natalie noted, was short and only ended up to her mother's neckline. She had to crane her neck in order to look at her eye to eye.
"You must be Mrs. Karashima?"
Her mother nodded and smiled. "Yes I am. I would like to see Mr. Yatsuma. Could you lead me to him?"
The woman nodded and flashed a smile. "Why certainly!"
She turned around and led them deeper into the building.
