The car ride back was quiet and awkward. Ahmed sat in the backseat and didn't mention a word about what he saw.
"I'm hungry, can we stop for something to eat?" he asked.
"Where do you wanna eat?" asked Hakeem.
"Taco Bell." I hated Taco Bell but I really wasn't in a position to protest. Hakeem pulled into the Taco Bell parking lot and we went inside. We ordered and sat in a booth, Hakeem and Ahmed on one side, and I sat alone on the other. Hakeem went to the bathroom to wash his hands.
"You know you're wrong right?" Ahmed asked me as soon Hakeem left.
"What are you talking about?" I asked innocently.
"You know what I'm talking about."
"You know they're not dating right? It was all a misunderstanding." I explained.
"That doesn't matter. You know how Tasneem feels about him. Don't hurt your friend over a guy."
"It was a mistake!" I said defensively.
"I don't know..that didn't look much like a mistake."
"Well it was."
"You have a boyfriend."
"I know that, and I love him. It was just a spur of the moment type thing. I'm not a cheater."
He shrugged and started eating. My stomach turned and my heart felt heavy. Not only did I betray my best friend, I also cheated on Fuad. My phone rang as soon as I thought of him. It was Fuad. I rejected it, I really was not in the mood to talk. Hakeem came back.
"You're not gonna eat?" he asked me.
"I'm not really hungry." I responded. Ahmed reached over almost immediately and began eating my food. They both ate really fast and in silence. We got in the car and rode back to the apartment complex.
"You did a good job tonight." said Ahmed, and patted Hakeem on the back. He went upstairs while me and Hakeem stood in front of our doors.
"Well goodnight." I said and reached for the doorknob. I was trying to avoid another awkward situation.
"Not so fast." he said and grabbed my hand. He pulled me into his apartment.
"Isn't your mom here?" I asked.
"Nope. I want to talk and if we do it out there somebody might catch us."
"Hakeem I really need to get back home."
"This will take five minutes." He sat down on the couch and patted the seat next to him, signaling me to sit down. I sat down with my body facing forward, I didn't want him to think I wanted another kiss.
"Hakeem, what we did was a mistake." I said.
"I know. It really wasn't my intention for that to happen..I didn't want it to get that far." My phone rang again, it was Tasneem. I shoved my phone in the pocket of my abaya. Hakeem raised one eyebrow.
"Was that your boyfriend?" he asked.
"Maybe." I said. He started laughing.
"Your secret is safe with me, and I'll talk to Ahmed so you shouldn't have to worry about him telling anybody."
"And Naima?"
"She doesn't know anybody." I let out a sigh of relief. I still felt really guilty for not telling Tas.
"Maybe I should tell Tasneem."
"If you want to do that then I one hundred percent understand."
"But it was an accident."
