I immediately hung up and looked up at Hakeem in panic.
"What's wrong?" he asked concerned.
"She heard everything."
"Who heard everything?"
"Tasneem."
"How?"
"She called me and I accidentally picked up. She had to have heard everything!"
"Call back and check just to make sure."
I dialed her number and waited for her to pick up. She sent me straight to voicemail.
"Yup. She heard." I said and threw myself against the couch again.
"Just explain the situation to her. She's your best friend, she'll understand."
"Hakeem there really is no explanation for what happened today. I don't even understand what happened today!" I exclaimed.
"Let me talk to her with you, she'll be less upset if we both break the news to her."
"No...I think that this is something that I need to fix myself."
"Alright just tell me if you want me to talk to her too."
I got up and grabbed my purse. I almost headed out the door but stopped and turned to face Hakeem.
"Thank you." I said.
"For what?" he asked.
"What we did tonight was wrong...but for the first time all summer, I forgot about everything bad that was going on. It was nice, even if it was just for a night."
"I couldn't have asked for a better one." he smiled and reached out his arms for a hug. I ran into his arms and he pulled me in tighter.
"I have to go." I whispered. He let go and I finally left his apartment and went into my own.
I went straight to my room and dialed Tasneem's number again. She still didn't answer. I laid in my bed and thought about what happened tonight. Did I have feelings for Hakeem? Or did I just like the way that he made me feel? I knew that I loved Fuad..but he hadn't made me feel good in a long time. I thought back to the days when Fuad and I were at our best.
"I found a place that we can be alone." he whispered to me as I took my books out of my locker in the morning.
"Where?" I asked.
"Meet me here right before lunch and I'll take you."
I waited the whole day, anticipating where Fuad was going to take me. He was always good at setting up our dates, he was probably the most romantic guy I had ever met. The day seemed to go really slow but once it hit 12:45, I ran to my locker.
"Where are you?" Tasneem had texted me.
"Sick, in the nurse's office. I'll see you later today."
"Aw I hope you feel better." she responded.
I got to my locker and Fuad was waiting for me.
"Let's go." he said. I trailed behind him as he lead me to a strange door. I had passed it everyday but never had thought of actually going in. He opened the door and there stood a staircase.
"Ugh I hate stairs." I whined.
"Trust me, it's worth the climb baby."
We walked up the stairs and opened yet another door. We were on the rooftop of our school.
"Wow." I said to myself quietly. I looked around, Fuad had set up a table with lunch for us, and flowers. "You did all this for me?" I looked up at him.
