It was chaos in the mercer house. Jack's mom was gone for a few days, Bobby was in charge, and the boys were bored. Jack had escaped to his room all day, avoiding all the shouting and working on song lyrics. After a while of this things finally got quiet, which was usually suspicious, but Jack wasn't necessarily paying any attention. He heard the phone ring downstairs, and he was about to get it whenever it quit, meaning someone else had gotten to it. He could hear Bobby's loud voice all the way from his bed, and he rolled his eyes as he heard his brother run up the stairs and into Angel's room. Once again they were all arguing over something, but that was normal. Jack continued to sing quietly, trying out some chords to go with the song. His door flew open suddenly, causing Jack to jump and nearly throw his guitar.
"Jesus Christ Bobby, what the fuck do you want?" Jack said, sitting back and glancing at his clock near his bed, seeing it was ten pm. Bobby snickered and sat on the end of Jack's bed, moving Jack's ashtray and cigarettes to the floor.
"What's the matter little fairy, I didn't scare ya did I?" Bobby asked, laughing.
"Seriously, what do you want?" Jack sighed, setting his guitar down gently and grabbing his cigarettes from the floor and lighting one. Bobby grinned and stood up.
"We were all thinking about hitting up a party tonight, and we were wondering if you were coming." Bobby said. Jack thought for a minute, and shook his head. I mean, it wasn't a hard decision, stay home all by himself and finally get some peace, or go to a party where his brothers would eventually leave him in their drive to get some, completely forgetting their little brother Jack even existed.
"No, I think I'll stay here this time." Jack said, leaning back and started to pluck his guitar's strings again. Bobby took the guitar away and grinned at Jack's protests.
"Not so easy little brother. See, me and the boys were concerned. You say you'll stay this time, but when's the last time you actually took me up on my offer. All you've done all day is avoid us, and you haven't gone out with us in ages. Shit, when's the last time you've even talked to a girl?" Bobby asked. Jack glared at him, and puffed on his cigarette. "Exactly!" Bobby exclaimed, making Jack jump a little. All these years and loud noises still bugged him out. "It's my job as a big brother to make sure you have fun cracker jack. I mean, you're kinda lucky, Seventeen and already hanging with the big dogs. If it wasn't for your big brothers you wouldn't even get the chance to go to these parties," he said, "You're going, and that's that. Wear something relatively nice, but not too nice. You're trying to attract girls, not make them think you're gay." Bobby said, and then he left, giving Jack no say in the matter. Jack sighed and finished off his cigarette, listening to his brothers arguing in the hallway about borrowing each others clothes and shoes. He pulled on a pair of Jeans, tshirt, and a hoodie, along with a pair of his sneakers. It wasn't that cold yet outside, but the fall wind always chilled him more than anyone else. He didn't bother brushing his hair, like always, and grabbed his pack of cigarettes and a lighter. As an afterthought he sprayed on a little cologne and walked out of his room and down the stairs. He was done before anyone else, and waited on the couch for everyone to come down. After another ten minutes his brothers filed down the stairs, all sporting similar outfits. Bobby looked Jack up and down, judging his choice.
"Hey, good job kid. You're giving off a kinda 'I don't care vibe', you know, the ones chicks always fall for." He laughed, slapping the back of Jack's head lightly. Angel and Jerry laughed, throwing around a few jokes about looking like a wannabe rock star, and then they all piled in Bobby's car.
