"Lara!"
I jumped as I heard my name being shouted. As I searched the coffee shop, I saw my best friend, Ali, at the front door waving and smiling like a kid that just got a free candy. And it turns out she was the one who just screamed out of her lungs just to call me. God, she is so weird. But I do love her. I really do. We were like sisters, not by blood, but by choice.
Ali and I were roommates, and that actually made us a lot more oriented with each other's lives. We get along so well, maybe because we're sharing the same struggles. We've been through a lot - together. I shall say, nothing, no one, can come between us.
"You won't believe what just happened." Ali said excitingly.
"Woah. Okay Ali. What did just happen that made you to lose your chills?"
"I just ran into Harry!"
"Harry as in, Harry Styles?"
"The one and only," she smirked.
"What is he doing here? Maybe he needs something? It always goes that way right? He keeps appearing when he needs something, then suddenly disappears and become completely invisible in this beautiful world." I snapped.
"Lara, are you out of your mind? It's been a year since we graduated and why can't you just move on with him and his bloody attitude. Maybe he changed. People change, you know?"
"Well, breaking news, he's not one of them."
"Whatever you say, Lara. See you at dinner. Bye!"
"Bye." I waved her a good bye. Okay what did just happen? Harry's back in town. I hate him. Well not everything about him. He's kinda cute anyways. Oh shut it. No. We went to college together and we were classmates since junior year. Yes we were friends. Friends with benefits - not sexual benefits, geez. We are not that kind of friends that talks every day, having deep talks, sharing secrets. Basically, he will just call my attention if he needs something, especially when it comes to home works. Who wouldn't hate him?
I hate myself. I hate myself because I kept on entertaining his favors. I kept on helping him, regardless of our situation. Am I really that kind? And I just became very unaware that the kindness that I'm showing was being abused. All I want is to help, but too bad, not all people can return it. Dang.
"Do I look like a waiter here?" I heard someone shouting. I think it's one of the customers.
"I'm so sorry. I just thought." Wait woah, that voice is familiar.
I escalated from my work station and ran towards them to get hold of the situation.
"Excuse me ma'am, what is going on here?" I asked calmly.
"This man just thought that I'm working in here. He keeps on asking where the rest room is."
"Sir, you could have ask-" I stopped. I was shocked. It's Jake Wells. He was my schoolmate back in our college year. I had feelings for him before, but it's not that serious. I knew that he's into someone. I'm not in the right position to interfere with their relationship. I distanced myself with him without even thinking that the friendship we built will be ruined. I'm such an idiot. He's a very nice friend and I just lost one. I left him without even explaining. I don't even know how to look at him in the eye.
"I'll handle him. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience." I responded. Wow, Lara, the peacemaker of the year.
"The restroom is in behind that bar." I said blankly.
"Thank you." He said without even looking at me. Okay, he's mad at me. Who wouldn't be?
I went back to my work station and started mixing beverages. I'm a barista here in the coffee shop for almost half a year. I'm a coffee person and that makes the job a lot easier for me. I'm earning cash and enjoying as well.
"Lara, I'm sorry for what happened earlier." Jake said with apologetic look.
"It's fine, it's normal. And it's my job to help our customers." I smiled shyly, trying my best to not be awkward at all.
"I'm not just your customer, I'm your friend, Lara." He snapped.
"I know." Now I'm tensed. I think this conversation will lead somewhere.
"You know? Then what the heck happened before? You just built a great wall of China between us. Why Lara? Did I do something wrong?" He snapped. He was a little furious and it's making me nervous. I can't open my mouth. Even though I want to say something, I just can't. I am ashamed of myself.
"Please speak, Lara." He said with a calming voice.
"I'm sorry Jake, I really am."
"I know. Why don't we start over?" He asked.
"I don't know if I really do deserve another chance. Look, I've hurt you. I pushed you away in my life without even explaining." I think I'm in the verge of my tears. But I don't want to cry in front of other people. I don't want them to pity me and be awed because I'm crying.
"Lara, I do believe that people do change." He said cheekily. What's with people today saying "People change" – quote of the day. People may change but it's not constant.
"Thank you Jake." I said with a smile.
"So shall we?"
"What shall we?" I am confused.
"Oh I mean, let's have dinner tonight. It's on me. We need to catch up with each other's life." He smirked.
"Yeah, sure." I need to tell Ali. She told me we'll be having dinner together tonight. I hope she won't be upset.
"Just text me your address and I'll pick you up at 8. Same number babe." Him saying 'babe' just gave me chills. This is not good.
"You don't have to, Jake. I can handle myself."
"No, I insist."
"Fine. I'll never win."
"I got to run. See you later, Lara."
"Bye."
This is kind of awkward. Having dinner with him? I mean, I don't have feelings for him anyways. It's just that, my conscience is messing up with me. I did a terrible thing to him and I just don't feel I deserve this restart. I just did an idiotic move. He believes that people do change. I don't even know if I changed. But right now, the only thing I want is to get my friend back. I still want him to be part of my life. As a friend.
"One iced latte, for to go please." Someone ordered. I put all of my attention on my work station and started making the iced latte. As soon as I finished the drink, I went back to the counter to give the order.
"One iced latte, for to go, just the way you want it. Enjoy." I said. I just put the drink on the counter and kept my mind focus on fixing my work station.
"Lara?"
I know that voice. As I turned around, my eyes widened and my jaw just dropped in shock. Say something Lara, come on.
"Oh, hi Harry."
