CHAPTER NINETEEN
'What happened?' asked Reginald Noah, fighting to keep his temper under control. 'It would be all so simple. Isn't that what you said?'
'Calm yourself darling. I tried to use local talent and they fucked up.'
'Can any of this be linked back to me?'
'Of course not.'
'I don't believe you Tara. You promised results. You flew there personally to ensure that Charlie was dealt with. I want her dealt with damn it!'
'You keep pushing out your little conspiracy to defraud thing at your end and I'll come up with something else from my end.'
'But either way, I'm going to prison Tara!'
'We'll get some high flying lawyer to work a deal. The one you're using needs to be replaced with one who knows how to work deals. They do it all the time. You should know.'
'Are you implying that...!'
'Calm down Reginald dear. You'll blow a valve or something.'
'Just get her!' said Reginald Noah in a barely restrained voice. 'Get her.'
'All good things come to those who wait,' said Tara.
'Bad things come to those who wait too long to fulfil their contract.' Reginald Noah terminated the call and burned another sim card. They were as cheap as chips anyway...if you had the right source.
'I didn't think you would ever answer your phone.'
'Sorry,' said Ben. 'I had it turned off.'
'Do you know who I am?'
'Yes Meghan.'
'I'm impressed. I've been told that my voice has no special characteristics about it.'
'It is unmistakable,' said Ben. 'I've heard your voice in anger mode as well as friendly mode.'
'I didn't think I was ever friendly towards you.'
'Yes you were.'
'You have an amusing side.'
'I think you could as well if you...'
'Okay just shut up and tell me what I need to know.'
'Alright,' said Ben.
'I know where you are.'
'I know where you are too.'
'You're probably sleeping with her, aren't you?'
'We don't do much sleeping.'
Detective Senior Constable Meghan Gordon went quiet for a moment. 'Alright wise guy...are you aware that her husband has implicated her in a conspiracy to defraud the insurance company?'
'Yes,' said Ben.
'He claims that she took a million dollars of money from his cunning account...you know what a cunning account is, don't you?'
'Yes. It used to be called the cunning kick in the New South Wales police,' said Ben. 'I knew a cop who kept his cunning kick inside the barrel of his revolver. Hundred dollar notes all wrapped up. The thing is that he got into a nasty situation one night and had to fire his weapon. The gun blew up in his hands and a grand or so was turned into confetti which fluttered down everywhere. He also lost his right thumb in the explosion.'
Meghan didn't respond immediately. 'Was he able to arrest the offender?'
'The story goes that the offender was arrested by other police while rolling around laughing fit to bust.'
