****Jack Frost had tricked her. Or had he?
Elle grappled with the reality of the previous night. She had been fully conscious when she kissed the man, and yet, it felt as if she should have seen through the deception. She had known from the start that the signs were there. Jack Frost had already played similar tricks during their trip down memory lane, once pretending to be a small child. How had she missed the deception again? Or was it something more unsettling? The thought that perhaps she had wanted the kiss—despite it being Jack and not Apollo—was deeply troubling. Was it morbid curiosity that drove her, or something else? The night before, she had opened her bedroom door to find Apollo standing there, eager to talk. But in her shock and embarrassment, she had slammed the door in his face before he could explain. She had been too mortified to face him, let alone speak with him. Elle felt she had betrayed Apollo. She should have known it was Jack impersonating him. Apollo's sense of humor, his scent, the coolness that radiated from his body—none of these traits belonged to the god of light. They were uniquely Jack Frost's.
The next day, Elle stayed in her room, locking her bedroom door and hurling harsh words at anyone who dared disturb her. Her hands had ignited during the night—one wrong move and she could set the room ablaze. The furniture was particularly vulnerable; a single spark could possibly ignite it all. Keeping her hands away from her body to avoid catching her dress on fire, Elle spent the morning battling her inner turmoil. The kiss had been fraught with emotion—intense, genuine, and confusing. There had been butterflies, an overwhelming sense of closeness, and a deep-seated desire for more with each kiss. Elle couldn't dismiss it as a mere trick. It felt real, and the feelings it stirred were impossible to ignore.
"I hate him!" Elle groaned, sitting on the floor with her knees hugged to her chest. Her hands, still flaming, were held up in the air to avoid burning anything."Hey, come on, I'm not so bad once you get to know me," came a cheerful voice.
Elle's head snapped up to see Hermes standing casually by the large doors leading into her room. Her jaw tightened in irritation. "Do you knock, or do you just barge in whenever you please?"
Today, Hermes sported casual jeans and a black band T-shirt, paired with golden high-top sneakers adorned with wings. His shaggy blond hair was in disarray, and he bounced on his feet as if he were high on caffeine rather than ancient divine energy. "Most of the time, it's the latter," Hermes admitted with a sheepish grin. He cleared his throat. "I'm here to get you out of the palace today!"
Elle's heart lifted at the possibility. "Do I get to go home?"
Hermes hesitated, a look of awkwardness crossing his face. "Uh, well... no. I've been expressly forbidden from attempting such a thing."
Elle's hope sank. "Then please go away and let me continue moping."
Hermes groaned in exasperation. "Come on, no one can spend too much time around this family without wanting to rip their hair out."
Elle shook her head stubbornly. "I've been eating with those people, enduring their endless etiquette lessons, and letting them dress me up like a Greek-empire Barbie. Right now, I have no desire to go anywhere they might be. Besides, there are actual lions out there! And I don't mean metaphorically. There's a real lion!"
