"What am I supposed to do?" Rima swallowed.

“Overcome your fears.  You are to swim around the temple and gather the three stones at the bottom that will open the door to the artifact.”

She bit her lip.  “This doesn’t include underwater battling, does it?”

The dragon inclined her head.  “You will see.”

She sighed and glanced over at Alistair.  “And what does my Protector do?”

“Exactly what his title suggests.  Protect you.  Including underwater.”

She watched as he shrugged and grinned at her.  “At least I can swim.”

“I can swim, too,” Rima replied, stretching her arms up above her head.  I just can’t swim that well.

“There are three differently-shaped stones at the bottom of the cistern.  Two have obstacles that guard them.  And one has creatures that you must defeat in order to obtain it.  There are three depressions on the ground.”

As the dragon said this, both Guardian and Protector looked down, startled.

“Insert the stones into the depressions, and you will have your artifact.  Simple?”

Alistair nodded and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Are we going to be timed?” Rima asked Saydra after a moment, who blinked at her.

“Take as long as you need.  I do recommend, however, doing this as fast as you can.  Humans can only stay underwater for so long, air bubble spells included.  And unless you fail at first, no breaks are offered.”

“Sounds comforting,” Alistair deadpanned.  “Come on, let’s go.”  And without warning, he lifted the Guardian up, as if she weighed no more than a feather, and tossed her into the water.

She flailed about in the water, and then swam up.  She broke the surface and sputtered and glared at Alistair, who was grinning widely at her.

“What did you do that for?” Rima asked.  She was more than annoyed at him at the moment.

He deftly slipped down into the water.  “We need to hurry and get this over with.  Don’t dawdle.”

She blinked at him and turned away, feeling her cheeks redden.  “Fine.”  As much as she hated to admit it, he was right.  She cupped her hands in front of her nose and mouth, and drew upon the gem on her necklace, thinking, Aer poroq.

A delicate bubble began to form over her mouth and nose, and when she dropped her hands, it ballooned slightly.  She briefly sank her head under water and took a deep breath.  Air filled her nostrils.

Good, Rima thought with a smile.  She performed the spell on Alistair, and once she was done, he prodded the bubble that covered the lower half of his face, looking curious.

“Keep in mind that the spell has a limit of half an hour.  It won’t pop unless there’s a violent impact,” she told him, before slipping into the cistern’s water and diving down...

The first two stones actually ended up being quite easy to obtain.  The first, a diamond-shaped one, had had a massive air bubble surrounding it, and been located to the right of the dragon statue’s clawed feet.  A powerful spell prevented it from popping, so all Rima had to do was carefully step into the bubble.
