Sliding the covers off my body I turned to my right side reaching for my phone. Sitting up in my warm comfy bed I walked over to the window I had in the left of my room. Pushing the frame of the window opening as a rush of cold wind enters the room. Shivers running down my skin feeling the coldness run down my veins. Rubbing my arms shivering slightly. Carefully climbing out landing on the tiles of the roof. They were rough against my skin I sat down. I pulled my legs close to my chest hugging them tightly to keep myself warm. Staring out into the quiet neighborhood I could hear cars driving by in the distance. Taking a deep breath as I analyze everything around me. It was gloomy in the sky, but the sun was going to peek out from the hidden clouds in a few hours.
Taking a deep breath I noticed a female walking her tiny Golden retriever. She admired her puppy from a far as he ran on his tiny legs. Huffing for air, lightly barking at the end of the sidewalk. My eyes drifted from her to cars in the distance moving rapidly across the street. I didn't understand why cars were driving so quickly down the road. There was barely any oncoming traffic or any cars on the street in general. Closing my eyes I exhaled a deep breath enjoying the quietness. My body relaxed as the wind continued to blow lightly. The quietness quickly ended feeling my phone vibrate next to me. Fluttering my eyes open I groaned looking at the caller ID, Nathan.
"Hello?" I said into the phone, trying not to sound annoyed.
"Why didn't you answer my calls!" He shouted into the phone.
"What?" Pulling my phone away from my ear as I rolled my eyes at it. Nathan is in one of his moods again.
"I've been calling you since last night! You're not answering your phone! I see you tweeting posting so why won't you answer me!" His voice bitter as hell.
"Nathan, in case you forgot I have a life aside from you! So will you stop shouting at me. I'm sorry for not answering your calls. I've been busy. Okay, so please calm down." I huff, trying to keep my voice calm.
"You were cheating on me! I saw those pictures you posted with that guy and his hands all over you!"
Rolling my eyes I grunted at him. I couldn't even come with a reply to him. The call drew silent on both sides. The only sound was our breathing. Nathan was such a pain when he went into one of his moods. There are days where I could handle him and days where I wish we never even met. Nathan started to shout into the phone again bringing my attention back to his call.
"You're such a slut! Why am I even with you!"
And with that said he hung up. I pressed my phone down to the roof tile. Tears escaping my eyes. My stomach went into tight knots unable to breathe evenly as my shoulder tensed up. There never goes a day without Nathan shouting something insulting to me just for hell of it. Sometimes he would be angry, upset, drunk or he would just say it to see if it affected me in anyway. No matter it was always painful to be with him. Sometimes I wonder why I'm even with him if he treats me poorly, but at the end of thinking I would remember that I love him and he was always there for me three years ago when my life went down the drain.
A soft knock on the window takes me out of my thoughts. I quickly wipe my tears from eyes before turning around to find my brother's girlfriend Maine in front of my window. She flashed me a sympathetic smile as I crawled back to the window. Her brown eyes meeting my fragile brown eyes.
"What are you doing out there?" She asked, helping me back into the house as she brushed off the dirt from my pjs.
"I just needed to clear my mind from some stuff ."
"And by stuff I assume Nathan?" She said, staring at my phone with concern in her eyes. "Kate, I know you were out there talking to him and he made you cry."
"Can we just drop Nathan as the subject and talk about something else?" Begging her not to push the subject any further.
"Kate, I am basically your older sister since I started dating your brother 6 years ago. I know you all too well. Please don't shut me out like you did with your brother. I know you're hurting." She reached for my hands. Squeezing them against hers. Her hands were warm against mine causing a comforting feeling.
"I'm not shutting anyone out. I promise I am fine." I lied, throwing a fake smile at her. She probably accepted it because she shrugged her shoulders at me.
"Okay, well you're brother is calling you downstairs. He said he wants to take you shopping after we eat. May I know why you're shopping again for the 10th time this week?" She questioned, furrowing her eyebrows at me.
"This time around was our annual family week back when mom and dad were around, but Alden always keeps his mind off it by taking me places and keeping himself busy to the point where he might get high blood." I explained to her as we descend the stairs.
"Your brother was never good at hiding his feelings, especially when it comes to your family." Maine chuckles shaking her head as she rested her arm around me.
I half smiled at her comment looking at her then back at the ground. Family week used to be the most fun time of the year where Dad would take us all to where ever no matter how far and mom would just go bananas with her shopping on Alden and I, but that all quickly changed. Tears began to sting my eyes again at the thought of it. She pulls me closer to her body as we enter the kitchen. Alden went all out for our lunch brunch. He made my favorite food Eggplant Parmesan with white rice along. I noticed him quickly stuff my favorite dessert Jamoca ice cream specifically from Baskin Robins in freezer before turning to the stove. The oven closes shut as Alden spirals around finding us sat at the table. His eyes shifted from his food to me begging for help with the plates. He nudges his head towards the cabinet. I shook my head at him walking over to the cabinet to grab three plates and the utensils.
"I'm glad you decided to join us." He teases, nudging me as I took a seat next to Maine after quickly setting the table.
"It's not like I had a choice." I said sarcastically grabbing some eggplant for my plate and rice.
I took small bites from my plate trying to act casual like I didn't just get another daily insult from Nathan. Alden doesn't really know much about my relationship with Nathan. He just knows the basics about him, we are dating and he's 2 years older than me. Every now and then Alden would hear about me crying over Nathan breaking it off with me and then suddenly we got back together. He hated that I'm with him and believes I'm blinded by love that's why I' stayed with him which is half true. I love Nathan and he's everything to me, but I am not stupid, I wouldn't do anything for him because he tells me to especially if I'm not comfortable with it.
Alden kept taking glances in my direction whenever he would look up from his plate or talked with Maine. I kept my face blank like I was tired and bored out of my mind which is inevitably true. He would clear his throat just to grab my attention, but I wouldn't care to look up. On the other hand Maine would nudge my leg from below the table to show some emotion to keep Alden from looking suspicious. We all eventually finished eating after 30 minutes and I helped Maine clean up the kitchen. We were both mumbling about my conversation with Nathan earlier. She insisted I break up with him, but I didn't ever answer back to her suggestion.
A loud knock erupts through the whole house causing Maine and I to jump back in fear. Alden stood up from his chair turning his neck towards the front door in suspicion. He proceeds to the door carefully. As soon as the door swings open there was loudly yelling and arguing. I heard Alden shouting at them to calm down and someone gets shoved because the door slams against the wall a few times. Maine quickly wipes her hands off joining Alden in the heated mess. It doesn't take long to hear Maine scream in pain from being shoved. I dried off my hands walking to the living room. As I entered the room I recognized the aggressiveness from the voice. Nathan. Alden was pushing Nathan out the threshold while Maine tried to calm Alden down pulling at his shirt. His muscles were flexing and gripping Nathan roughly to leave.
"Let me see my girlfriend, douche bag!" Nathan shouts at him.
"Get out of my house! I don't you anywhere near my sister!" Alden shouts back, pushing him back farther.
With that Nathan throws a punch at Alden's right cheeks. He falls backwards as Maine tries her best to ease his fall. I rush to the door pushing Nathan back roughly seeing my only brother half unconscious on the floor.
"Alden! Are you okay?" I asked, concern. Tears brimming my eyes. After Alden slowly nods his head he's okay I directed my attention towards Nathan. "What the hell do you think you're doing!"
"We need to talk!" He shouted, gritting his teeth together. "We're talking in private! Come with me!" He reached for my wrist.
I swing my wrist away from him. "No! We don't! After you tried to knock my brother out we have nothing to talk about! I'm not going anywhere with you!" I argued with him.
"If you don't want me to throw another punch at your brother, you'll come with me otherwise I suggest we don't enter that state!" He threatened, breathing hard on me.
I stare back at Alden finding Maine cleaning off the blood from his cheek. Their eyes don't meet mine, but I shrug my shoulders walking out from the house. Closing the door behind me I follow Nathan out to his car. He carefully sits on the hood of his car with a cocky smirk across his lips. I stood a few steps away from him with my arms across my chest.
"Start talking, Babe." Rolling my eyes at him before staring at my feet.
"Baby, look I'm sorry for yelling at you earlier and I'm sorry for throwing a punch at your brother. I didn't mean to. I just don't like fighting with you." His voice soft, but there wasn't an ounce of sincerity in his speech. All I could sense was bullshit so we would make up and probably make out in his car again like usual. "Please forgive me. I am really sorry. Don't be mad at me anymore." He reaches for my hand. Rubbing his rough thumb over my palm. I yanked my hand away from him in fear and out of discomfort. He acted like the last ten minutes of yelling or punching didn't happen.
"Don't act innocent, Nathan! You know what you did and I'm not happy with that!" I argued.
"Look, I'm really sorry, okay? I didn't mean for any of this to happen. C'mon let's be on good terms again. I really miss kissing you." He ran his hand through his dark hair brushing it back. His hazel eyes tried to hold a gaze, but I never had the nerve to meet it. All I knew was that I was furious with the way he handled everything.
"We are far from okay! I don't know what to do anymore, Nathan! You make it hard for me to love you!" Fumbling with my fingers in frustration. I couldn't stand being out here anymore with him. I should be back in the house checking up on my brother. Pacing away from him I felt his fist clench and his muscles tighten hearing my words. As my hand reaches for the doorknob I felt someone grip my shoulders turning me around. A hard cold slap meets my cheek causing me to fall flat on the ground. I grunt in pain feeling the sting on my face.
Next thing I heard was powerful thud and Alden shouting. Maine rushes to my side aiding me while we stood on the side watching Alden throw out Nathan.
"Kate, we are over! Don't you ever talk to me again! You're such a slut and whore! I hope you have a great life with your douche bag of a brother and his bitch of a girlfriend!" Nathan shouts before walking out to the car. Quickly driving off before Alden has the chance to call the police.
"Kate, are you okay?" Alden asked after shutting the door.
"I'm fine. I just need some space!" I shouted at him in anger. Brushing his hand off my face and rushing up the steps.
Alden was about to retaliate, but Maine held him back. I slipped into my bed crying to myself. Eventually I stayed locked up in my room the rest of the day. I didn't want to face Alden after all this. The humiliation I got from him and the neighbors was good enough to keep me embarrassed for the rest of my life until my kids have kids.
This was so typical of Nathan to do this. It happens at least once a month where he'll break out into a huge anger problem and take it to my house. Alden always got involved to back me up and Maine would be there witness everything and aid us if one of us got hurt. It was terrible thing to be part of every month, but dating Nathan came with it. We all accepted it. And by everyone I just meant me, however Alden and Maine tired to accept it, but never accepted it being a routine. They hated seeing me hurt and abused like this, but it's part of love in my opinion. I don't want to let him go, even if he hurts me. I'm willing to stay with him and tough it out through this on/off relationship with him. As of now we are off until Nathan comes back saying we're back on after sleeping with some girls and blowing off steam with some boozes. Maybe he'll come back or maybe he won't.
