Chapter 1

Mommy told me that I shouldn't eat a lot of cookies. That if I ate a lot, I would taste too sweet. She said if I were too sweet it would come to eat me; a monster whose mouth is full of sweet teeth and has black eyes like the night.

      I didn't believe Mommy.

Using my little feet I scamper into my room with the box of store bought cookies. A giggle escaping my mouth as I run with the stolen snack; delighted in not following Mommy's rule about not eating sweets.  I carefully close my door. The hinges creaking as the door softly closes, the steady squeak filling my small, dark room. Holding the box in a tight grip I swiftly run over to the other side of my bed before squatting down.

I happily tear back the seal of the cookie box after sitting it down in my lap. The yummy scent of chocolate fills my nose making my mouth water in hunger.

My tongue wets my lips as my clammy little hand finds its first cookie and brings it up to my face, smelling the chocolate chips. Placing the cookie in my mouth, I slowly enjoy the first little bite before devouring the rest. Licking my lips I look back down at the cookies, picking up another. The sweet and slightly salty taste of the treat making happiness fill my small body. The only happiness that can come from getting what you want. With a crumble covered smile I reach back into the box for another sweet.

Half the box is gone when the lights start to flicker on and off, a slight static sound meeting my ears. My little blue eyes glance upwards towards the sight, head tilting to the side in wonder. On and off, on and off the flickering continues before the lights are still and shining bright. I glance around my yellow flowery decorated room before shrugging my skinny shoulders and pick up my next cookie.

As the cookie is lifted to my mouth the lights go off completely, leaving me in the dark—a soft slow creaking beginning at the end of the hall. I can't tell what's making the noise but the creaking gets louder—closer to my room. Scared, I immediately jump up, spilling the box of cookies onto the floor.

       "Mommy?" I softly whine.

Lifting up my hands, I begin to walk around the dark room trying to find the light switch—the creaking closer now. As the sound echoes throughout my room it suddenly stops. I continue to walk through the dark but fumble back when I run into something hard, like a wall. My eyes begin to become wet as I bring a hand up to hold my hurt nose, but the pain is forgotten when I glance up to see a shadowy figure. Curious I reach out towards the wall and find the familiar feeling of cloth through my fingers. The lights suddenly flicker back on and standing before me is a man.

      At least, I think it's a man.

He's tall like a street pole with black pants and black shoes that are covered in mud. My eyes travel up the long legs to reach his black shirt before glancing at his odd long pale fingers, noting their boney like appearance. I bend back my neck to look at his face and see that the stranger is wearing a mask that covers the upper half of his face.

The mask is crafted out of some sort of blue fur. I look closer but can't find the string to hold the mask, like it's missing. Hair the color of a crow's feather flows down his head and onto his shoulders, framing his face like a lions mane. How odd, when the lamp's light hit the hair just right I can see different shades of blue. But, his eyes are the creepiest.

They're solid black. I stare curiously at those eyes, wondering why there is no white in them. My reflection looks back at me from in the solid black eyes, and the strange man wears a big smile on his face, letting me see his pearly whites...showing me how sharp a few are.

I stick a finger into my mouth to touch my teeth, seeing if they are as pointy as his. They aren't. That's when his grumpy voice speaks, "Why are you eating my sweets, little girl?"

I look at him confused. "These are my cookies." He shakes his head slowly and his smile widens. "I'm afraid not dear."

Puzzled, I softly reply, "Mommy bought these cookies, so they're mine."

He is silent, his scary eyes staring at me. I stare back, examining his mask. It's not Halloween. Why is he wearing it? A couple of seconds past between us and I can't help but ask, "Why are you wearing a mask?"

He doesn't answer so I ask another question. "How did you get into my room?"

His smile widens showing the grey gums that hold the shark-like teeth in place. "That's a secret, my dear," the stranger replies in a tired voice, "Tell me, do you taste sweet?"

I shrug my shoulders. "Mommy says I taste sweet because I have a sweet tooth, but I don't think so."

He looks around my room, eyes landing on the cookies that cover the floor. "How are you going to repay me for my cookies?" I shrug my shoulders not sure how to respond. He smiles wide at my response and his eyes flash.

"How about the next time we see each other you have to come...visit me," He says carefully.

"Sure, will we be friends?" I ask, excited that I might have a new friend to play with. The fact that he seems to like cookies as much as I do is a big plus. We can even sneak into the kitchen together next time to get the sweets.

He flashes his sharp teeth at me before replying, "Yes, we can be friends. Why don't you tell me your name?" He lends down to look me fully in the face, his eyes looking over every part of me.

"My names Shae and I'm six," I proudly say.

"Hello Shae, it's nice to meet you." He puts his long skinny fingers before me, waiting for me to reach out and shake his hand. I do. His fingers snake over my hand, griping it tightly.

A burning sensation starts to creep up my hand and I let out a little cry of pain. I try pulling my hand from his grasp but his grip just tightens the more I pull. A few tiny tears roll down my cheeks as the pain increases. Then like magic it fades and he lets go of my hand. I quickly snatch my hand towards my chest.

"That hurt," I complain, rubbing my hand and looking for a burn mark, "What did you do?"

"I did nothing. Just making sure you don't break our little deal." Half of his mouth lifts up. I nod my head, trying to understand. "Well Shae, I think my time is up for now, until next time."

The lights flicker shadowing us again in darkness and softly I hear the man say, "Oh and Shae, I give you permission to eat my cookies. I do hope you get sweeter." My brows left together at his statement before the lights come back on.

      The man is gone.

I turn in a circle looking for the strange man but he is nowhere in sight. I'm so confused. How could he come and go from my room without me knowing? Was it a dream? I look around some more before finding my proof. There on the floor are mud stains, their shapes strange yet I know they're his.

My little shoulders lift and a sigh escapes my lips. I turn around to pick up the cookies. Mommy will be mad if she sees that I took them, so I finish putting the cookies back into the box before slipping the box up under my bed. Better to hide them than let Mommy know I've eaten half the box.  I walk toward my door and reach up for the handle. The door slowly opens showing me the brightly lit hallway. Excited, I run out of the room, wanting to tell Mommy about my new friend.
