Chapter 5
The phone falls from my hand to the floor as the pounding on the door increases, the loud bangs echoing in the small apartment space. Mom starts to shout through the phone’s speaker, her words muffled with static before another deep growl sounds from behind the red wooden entrance. I freeze on the spot, my heartbeat increasing in pace. Fear springs to life; it’s claws keeping my legs rooted to floor—the instinct to run and hide in my room making me shiver.
Then, the wood splinters. Red chips of paint falling to the ground.
I immediately move to the kitchen to grab a knife to protect myself with when a clawed hand breaks through the wood, shortly followed by the body of a willowy shaped tall man. I freeze in horror, my mind not comprehending what I’m seeing.
The strange man easily pulls the remaining pieces of the door apart, letting them fall to the ground without care. A blue tailed suit and black button up shirt covers his thin form. The upper part of his grey toned face hidden behind a blue, furry mask that covers his eyes and the bridge of his nose. Thin lips pull back in a predatory smile revealing rows of hazard shaped teeth, the gums a violet pink. In a hoarse voice he calls out, “Shae…”
A terrified scream is ripped from my throat and I run into the kitchen, his footsteps following closely behind. I sling open the drawers as I pass them, trying to slow him down. Racing around the middle Isle I pause and turn to find him directly on the other side, the ends of his lips curled into a smile.
“Stop running,” he rasps, “I command it. Do not making me angry Shae, love.”
With a heave I grab one of the bar stools and launch it over towards him, hitting him square in the chest. A roar resounds in his throat on impact, awakening an animalistic fear inside of me I never knew existed. Without thinking I run across the living room and start up the stairs, the blinding need to get away making me fly up the steps.
Elongated fingers circle around my right ankle, pulling me face first towards the carpet-plush ledges. I ignore the pain from the impact and sharply turn to kick the stranger in the face. He chuckles as I miss and quickly I wrap my arms around the stair railing, continuing to wildly kick at the strange man. The grip on my ankle tightens when my free foot hits him in the gut, causing him to grunt in pain.
Tears line the rims of my eyes as the stranger grabs my other foot and pulls it down to be pinned by the heel of his foot. Narrow black eyes look at me from the two holes in the mask, sending a shiver down my spine. With a frown he roughly grabs my shirt and begins to wrench me in every direction, throwing my back harshly against the protruding steps and my head against the railing. With another rough jerk my grip on the railing is lost and I’m thrown roughly back down on the steps, banging the back of my head.
My eyes flicker in distortion and pain, a whimper escaping my lips. I lift my heavy body just an inch from the stairs before I’m pushed back, the strangers sharp teeth a few centimeters from my face. Hot tears stream down my face as hushed sounds escape my lips. His cold fingers gently wipe them away.
“I told you to stop,” he states, “You can’t run, Shae. Go on, ask why.” Those black eyes stare at me, the ends of them crinkled in delight. A chocked sob leaves my mouth, my skull pounding in agony. His smile grows, “Ask why.”
With trembling lips I ask, “…why?” The masked man lowers his mouth close to my ear.
“Because,” he breathes, “you belong to ME.” With a growl he wraps his free hand around my wrist and an odd sensation begins.
