Chapter 1

Highway to Hell:

{Emily's POV}

I wake up to the sound of my phone ringing to the tune of Marimba. Shit. What time is it? 2:40. I took a "Gap Year" after I graduated High School, ever since then I've been sleeping in way to late and accomplishing absolutely nothing.

I quickly pick up my phone "Hello?" My voice raspy from sleep. "Hey Emily, what are you up to?" It was mom, "Nothing...," As usual.

"Well, I called to ask you if you wanted to come over for lunch, maybe?" Without even thinking I respond "Yeah! Uhm, I'll be over in ten!" "Sounds good, see you soon." I say goodbye and hang up.

It's not unusual to have lunch with my mom, she always waited on me hand and foot. It was pure hell getting her to let me move into my own place.

Before I leave, I walk into the bathroom. I look into the mirror satisfied with my looks. I have long brown hair, blue eyes, and a perfectly curvy body, but not to fat.

I quickly comb through my hair and toss on a baggy shirt and a pair of yoga pants, that I pulled out of my hamper. It's already been five minutes and I didn't want to be late, so I head out the door.

I pull up to moms house, the only car in the drive way is her Blue Ford Escape, I assume dad's at work.

I walk up to the door, letting myself in, and I'm immediately greeted with a hug by mom. "Hey Emily! I missed you!" I just saw you yesterday. "Missed you too," I say, pulling out of the hug, giving her a fake smile. "Why don't we go eat? I made sandwiches." She leads the way to the kitchen.

We sit down, eating our sandwiches, with just little small talk here and there. Mom finishes her food before mine and for awhile she just sits there and stares at me. Finally she sighs "Emily. I have news for you..." I set my sandwich down ready to listen. "I've thought it through and, I want to let you spend the summer at our shore house. Just you and your friends. It's your last summer before college and I think you deserve it," She offers a small smile.

I don't know what to say, I'm so shocked that she would actually let me stay the entire summer at the beach house without her there. "Ye- yeah!" I stutter trying to wrap my head around this" That's so nice of you!" I smile back, this time it's a real one.

"Just don't tear the house apart, please."

"I won't! Promise!" I say, knowing she can trust me.

I was so anxious to call my friends, so I quickly finish my sandwich and give my mom a huge kiss to thank her again.

I drive home and pull out my phone right away, I already know I'd be inviting my best friends Zoe and Layla. I met Zoe in our first year of private school while I met Layla just a few years ago , junior year of high school. The only problem was that I'd have to convince Layla to come to the states since she recently moved to Manchester, England ( but quickly acquired an accent.) I decide to give it a shot anyways.

After a couple rings I finally here an accented voice from the other end "Ello?" I hear lots of talking in the background.

"Layla! Hey! I called to ask you if you wanted to come visit me this summer at my beach house, I haven't seen you in awhile!"

"You know how much I'd love to but... It's a lot of money and I was spending the summer with a few of my friends over here. I'm sorry Em, but I don't think it'll work out."

I sigh trying to think up a plan. "How 'bout..." I pause. "How 'bout I pay for you to come over? You and your friends?"

"That's so nice of you Em, are you sur-," I cut her off. "I'm positive. Next Saturday, alright?" "Yeah, thanks so much! This is going to be a lot of fun!"

After calling Zoe to tell her all the details I start packing my bag, singing "Let's go to the beach, each. Let's go get away..."

Gosh, what am I even singing?

As I'm packing I make sure to pack each of my 3,416 CD's, I own everything from Justin Bieber to Johnny Cash. I've always been obsessed with music, it's kinda my thing, and I always have a song for every moment and situation there is.

I finally finish packing, there's about 5 or 6 bags filled with all my stuff, I'm kind of an over packer. At least I know I won't be missing anything.

The week seems to go by so slowly. It always goes slower when there's nothing to do. But, finally it's Saturday! I get ready into a plain old camisole, shorts, and Old Navy flip flops, throwing my long brown hair up into a messy bun.

It's just the girls, they won't mind.

I haul all my bags out the door and into my silver 2004 Honda Civic. I kiss good-bye to my run down condo (that I totally wouldn't have if it weren't for my parents). I look into my rear view mirror and apply some RiRi Woo, that looks goes perfectly with my fair skin, blushed cheeks, and cat eyed liner.

Before I pull out of my drive, I slip in my AC/DC Highway to Hell CD.

"I'm on the hiiiiighhway to hell," I sing along.

Highway to Hell. Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
