My eyes open and close multiple times until I recognize my surroundings. I sit up on the couch, and throw the blanket off of my warm body. Since when was I sleeping on the couch? "Good morning." Gary says. (The butler) "Since when do I sleep on the couch, Gary?" I ask. "By which time have I slept on the couch." He corrects me. I groan. "By which time have I slept on the couch, Gary?" I put my hands on my hips. "That is better, my dear. Why, you got home at a late hour last night, with your dearest friend Tyler." I laugh. "My dearest friend? Okay, whatever. Did I fall asleep or what?" He takes a deep breath. "I am going to ignore your in proper language, and tell you, that yes, you had fallen asleep on your way back from your night out. Your dearest friend Tyler had carried you to the front door, and Rosemary and I could not handle carrying you up the stairs, so we settled for the magnificent couch." Gary bows and scurries off to the kitchen. I smile. That was sweet of Tyler, considering he hates me. I take my phone out of my purse, which is on the ground and text Tyler.
Skyla- thx for last night. I had a really good time. thx for carrying me to the door lol
I run up the stairs and put away some of my clothes from last night. I open up my drawers and grab a shirt and some leggings. I walk over to my bathroom and hop in the shower, listening to some Beyoncé. I start to sing in the shower and when I'm done I wrap my hair in a towel, dry myself off, and put my clothes on. I pick up my phone and walk back to my bedroom. I jump onto my bed and sit up against a pillow, checking my phone for any messages.
Tyler-No prob. btw i heard that nat is fine she just has a cast on for a couple of months
I text him back.
Skyla- Ok good. Ill text her later.
I go to sit at my desk and start to brush out my hair when my phone starts to vibrate beside me. I look at the Caller ID. Carter. I pick up immediately. "Hello?" I say. "Hey." I hear a raspy voice on the other line. Then, there is silence. "Skyla?" He asks. "Yeah?" I say quietly. "There's something I need to tell you." I start to smile. He might like me back. I clear my throat. "Yeah, what's up?" I ask. "Um, Ariana and I got back together." "What?" I say in a calm voice, trying to contain my anger. "Yeah. She said that she was so hurt from me and that she wanted me to feel the same way she did, like when she was with Zack." "Carter, what about all the things you told me about yesterday? You couldn't be with her anymore, you just tolerated her, all she cares about is herself? Did you forget about all that?" "Yeah, I did. And quite frankly, Skyla. I think this is the right choice and you don't really have a say in all this." "I think you're making the worst decision of your life. We're in grade 12, and she probably thinks this is going to last after high school." "Skyla, I want it to end this way. I want to be with her, so just back off." He hangs up. I scoff as I throw my phone on the fuzzy white carpet. A tear falls down my face, I tried to suck it in, but it squeezed out anyways. I brush my hair out, and dry it. I put some makeup on and lie down on my bed. I think I should tell Carter how I feel, now. I decide to do it, because I can't keep this in and just watch him be with Ariana. I run, and I mean bolt, down the stairs and grab my key off the hook. I get in my car and pull out of the driveway. I know where Carter lives, we've hung out a few times. After a few minutes, I pull into his driveway. I run to the door and knock. It's a Saturday afternoon, exactly 1:00. I look down at myself, and I don't look great. Whatever. A blond, middle aged woman answers the door. Carters mom. "Hi.." She stops. "Skyla." I remind her. "Oh, I'm sorry hon. What can I do for you?" She asks. "Is Carter here? I really need to talk to him." She smiles. "Carter! Someone is here to see you!" I hear a door open upstairs and Carter comes down with no shirt on. Man. I do NOT mind seeing that. He stops at the bottom of the stairs once he sees it's me. He walks over to me and puts a firm hand on my upper arm. His teeth grit closed. "What are you doing here?!" He asks as he looks upstairs, making sure no one is watching. He opens the door and takes me on the porch. " I came to tell you something." "This something couldn't have been told over phone?" He asks. "No." I say. "Carter. You can't be with Ariana." I say, looking into his gorgeous eyes. "Why?" He asks. "Because you need to be with me. Carter, I like you. As more than a friend." I hold his hand and this time he doesn't let go. "I think I've known it for a while, and I've been trying to deny it, until yesterday. Tyler told me to tell you, because I needed to be up front about it, and he said that you might like me back." I smile. "Listen, Skyla." I cut him off before he can say anything more, by connecting my lips to his. I close my eyes and enjoy this moment. He pulls away after what feels like forever. "No." He says. I kiss him again, this time, pulling him closer to me. He doesn't do anything, he just kisses me. He puts his hands around my waist, and pulls me in, and I can feel his hard, strong chest touching mine. A door swings open and I see Ariana standing there. We both turn around, and I chuckle to myself, until Carter blurts something out. "She came on to me. I don't like her at all. Ari, I swear." I look at him with the most hurt face. "And you call me the tramp." She says as she runs over to Carter and hugs him. He puts his arms around her small body and holds on to her tight. "Carter, I need a minute. I'll be waiting for you inside." She winks as she trails her hand down his chest. She whips her head around and shoots me a dirty look. "What. The. Hell! Was that?!" I ask. "Carter, you returned the kiss." "I know." He says. "It was a mistake. You should just leave." "You're not even going to talk about this? Just going to run away from it and try to forget it?" I ask with an irritated voice. I don't lose my eye contact with him. "Yeah." He says as he turns around and walks to the door. He opens the door and steps in but stops. He turns around and I smile, knowing that he's going to take me back. "Can you leave?" He asks. My smile quickly falls down my face and turns into a frown. "Yeah, whatever you want." I turn around slowly, waiting for that moment, like in the movies where he turns me around and kisses me the hardest he's ever kissed anyone, and he doesn't. I turn around when I hear the door slam and he's gone. I walk back to my car slowly and step inside. I sit still for a few minutes with my hands on the wheel and I just sit silently. I don't move. I stare at his house, but it feels like I am staring off into space. I pull out of his driveway, and look for my wallet in the glove compartment. "Yes!" I whisper. I open up my wallet when I get to a stop light and look for Starbucks gift cards. I find one, and I have another 10 dollars, so I think I'll be good. I turn a few corners and get to Nathalie's house. I get out of the car, locking it and I go to knock on the door. Nathalie answers and I start to cry and laugh at the same time. I give her a tight hug. "What happened?!" I say, laughing. She giggles. "Fell down the stairs. What's wrong with you?" "Carter got back together with Ariana." Then the tears start streaming down my cheeks. "Oh, come here girl." She holds out her arms. I run into her arms then take a deep breath and laugh. "Alright, we're going to Starbucks. Put some nice clothes on. Actually, you know what, let's just go. I really don't care." She laughs as she grabs her purse off the hook and tells her parents where she's going. "We'll be back soon!" She yells. We each get in the car, and I tell her about everything that happened with Carter and Ariana earlier. "So how was the movie with Tyler last night?" She asks as we walk into Starbucks. "It was good." She stops me in the line. "What happened?" She asks. "What do you mean? Nothing happened." She crosses her arms. "I know you. What happened?" I sigh. "Don't freak out. It was nothing." We get to the front of the line and we both order. "Two Cotton Candy Frapps please." I say. The lady smiles. "Alright. $8.99." She says. I hand her my gift card and she tells us to move to the right to wait for our drinks. "Thanks girl. So what happened?!" Nathalie asks me. "Okay, well I knew that Tyler did NOT like me at all, I knew that when I first met all of your friends. So I asked him about it and at first he denied it, but after he told me that he thought I was stuck up and only cared about myself." Her face starts to turn red. "Nathalie. Calm, please." "WHAT?! HE SAID THAT?!" "Nat, it's okay. We got along really well after that and I think he had fun last night. So just drop it. Please. He is going to be mad if he finds out that I told you! Don't say anything, for the sake of a new friendship, please." She sighs. "Skyla. I am not happy about this, at all, okay?" "Yeah, I understand, but he apologized, and I forgave, and everything is good, so please just forget about it. Your best friend and boyfriend are now friends instead of enemies. Be happy!" I say to her. She doesn't break her eye contact with me, and a frown stays placed on her face. "Fine. I won't mention anything now, but always know that I can explode at any time." "Okay. Thank you." I say. We get our drinks at sit a table closest to the window. "So, you are not going to give up on Carter, right?" She asks. "Uh, Nat. I think that is the breaking point. He has a girlfriend, I kiss him twice and he rejects me, tells me to get off his property and that I'm not really a part of his life. I think that this is it." She almost chokes on her drink. "No friend of mine ever gives up, just so you know." "Nathalie, no. He doesn't like me the same way I like him, so it's down. Over. I'm not talking to him anymore. That's what he wants and he deserves that freedom from me." "Skyla, you are going to prom with Carter, whether you like it or not. Suck it up, and get ready for the ride. Because you're getting together with Carter." She smiles mischievously and takes another sip of her drink.
