AN// Hello good people of Wattpad!! I hadn't planned to upload this for at least a few more weeks, but I thought what's the harm in uploading at least the first chapter as of now. Yes this is a sequel to my story Fledging. It is a stand alone book but later in the story it will be better if you had read the first book before this one. Not to mention there could be spoilers for the first one in this book so you have been warned!! Let me know what you think of book no. 2 in the comments and of course show your love by clicking that little star button, thanks guys!! -Raven
Chapter 1
The sea is enormous, nothing but water for miles on end. Marred only occasionally by specks of land floating out there on their own. And yet, despite the sea's vastness... I always seem to run into trouble.
I darted around another large grouping of coral on a submerged boulder to escape the massive maw of dual row sharp teeth chasing after me. My arms formed an arrow to part the water in front of me as my strong tail whipped through the warm liquid fast as a whip, hopefully it would be fast enough. As I sped through the water, I kept calling out in loud clicks hoping that help was close by. I angled my body upward as I shot toward the surface, there might be more help up there.
Now, there were swarms of fish starting to scatter from our chase and the seascape began to become more colorful with plants and animals alike; the densely populated area was just moments away.
I gave another loud burst of clicks looking for someone in particular now. Moments later I felt a new presence not far off, water parting quickly around the fast moving object. Before either of us had time to react, a grey and black blur rammed into the Mako shark chasing me. I turned around and floated where I was, watching the fight unfold before me. The water swirled with action, bubbles formed everywhere making it difficult to see what was happening. A loud sound of clicks were being emitted from the newcomer as it head-butted the shark then swam away with agile grace from the snapping teeth to repeat it on the shark's other side. Try as the shark might, it couldn't get anything on the sleek striped dolphin darting around it. The shortfin gave one last halfhearted lunge before shaking its head and trying to turn around with its attacker still going at it. The shark managed to get free and high fin it away from its attacker and would have been meal, this one wasn't worth the fight.
The dolphin came up to me and chittered away fiercely, I could barely keep up.
"Yes I know I always get into trouble, but I can't help it," I replied in the click and whistle language of the dolphins.
Wave Runner put his eye up to mine and stared at me for a moment before darting down to my tail and checking out every part of me to make sure I was ok. He nudged the fin on my left forearm and let out a short chirp. I looked down and saw that there was a small gash along the thin papery membrane.
"That's nothing, I'll be fine. Thanks for helping me out back there."
"You will get killed if you keep up with such antics," Wave Runner chided me. "You are still very young. You do not understand what danger you can get yourself into."
"I'm thirteen, Wave Runner, that's not 'very young'. Besides, staying cooped up in the depths is so boring. There's so much more stuff to do further up, and then there's the land..."
"The land is bad, nothing good comes from the waterless region above."
"Says you who hasn't or can't even go up there," I rolled my eyes at my friend, what did she know?
