Trumpets. Why the hell did they decide trumpets would be the best way to wake people up?Groaning I pull myself from my cot and put on my uniform. Unlike Peggy, I was strictly against skirts. I was unwilling to wear anything other than pants and shoes that I could run in. I'll give it to Peggy though, she's can kick ass in those heels if she wants to. Checking to make sure my dog tags were tucked firmly in my beige shirt, I lace my boots and head to the mess hall.
From about 20 yards off I could start to hear the clanking of silverware and the chattering of hundreds of hungry men. Flipping open the tent curtain at the entrance I was greeted with the surprisingly pleasant smell of... waffles?
Suddenly Bucky was in my face, two trays held aloft as he greeted me excitedly. "Evelyn, there's waffles today! Isn't this exciting!"
"Bucky, there's only waffles because we're all getting sent off today."
Paying no mind to my remarks, Bucky quickly ushered me off to a table with a few other men and Steve. Glancing up from his coffee, Steve nodded at me to acknowledge my presence and then continued to chat with the man to his left.
Bucky had set our trays down now and pulled me onto the seat next to him. Grinning I began to dig into my waffles, the taste was so overwhelming I felt like dieing right there on the table. "Now this is why I enlisted. Pity the rest of the food isn't this great."
Bucky turned his head towards me, "Well, the dryness lets you use your imagination and the lack of flavor just adds to the experience." I giggle and turn back to my currently empty plate.
"So, what's the likelihood they're going to let us have seconds?"
"Evelyn, did you seriously think they'd let us have seconds of anything that tastes even remotely decent?" Asked Peggy as she sat down next to us at the table.
"H-hey Peggy."
"Hello Steve, are you feeling alright about today?"
"About as good as one could get about being shipped off to battle."
Suddenly the mess hall quieted drastically and we all turned in our seats. The sergeant major was in the front of the hall and I've never seen that many men stand and salute so fast.
Discretely looking around I could see the fear and excitement displayed upon most faces. After letting us sit again, the sergeant began to speak. "I know you have all been waiting for this moment for a while, but for some you'll have to wait a little bit longer now." Confusion spread through the mess hall, "Not all of you will be heading out this morning for your assignment. Only one unit will be deployed today, and that is for an undercover mission. I'm sorry to dissapoint you all. Have a good breakfast."
Chatter spread throughout the hall like wildfire, many were angry. They had waited for so long to serve their country and now for nothing. I looked at Steve to see his reaction. All I could read was dissapointment. "I did all of this for my country, now for nothing. I let you all experiment on me with this serum and now I have to go back to being a showman? Dancing in front of audiences? No. I won't let them put me on stage again."
"Steve, I promise this will all work itself out. Just trust me on this one, please." Argued Peggy.
I reached across and set my hand on Steve's, "Hey Steve, it's ok. You're still my hero even if you aren't off fighting the big enemies." I put my hand on Bucky's as well, "You both fought my demons and saved me from that. So I think you've done more than enough. And I couldn't be more thankful."
I could feel myself start to tear up at the though of my past, and Bucky pulled me into his side. And for that instant everything was alright.
