"Stop!" I tried to scream, but I knew that what was coming out of my mouth was barely a whisper. He wouldn't stop yelling at me and I just couldn't handle it anymore. It was his fault we were fighting in the first place. He had confessed he was cheating on me, but that he wanted to try again. Like hell I was gonna try again. I raise my voice. "You know what? I'm leaving. I have plenty of other places to stay. I'll be back for my things another day." My remark falls into the silence. He was finally quiet. He stares at me as I turn around, grab my keys then rush out the door, slamming it on my way out. I thought something was up, and boy was I right. I deserved someone better than him. And even if he said he wanted to change, he must not want to that much considering he hooked up with the other girl over 5 times.
I run down the stairs and out the front door of the apartment complex. Once I make it outside I lean up against the building catching my breath. This was not alright. I had said I knew of plenty of places to stay, but truth be told I only knew of one. And the one person I wanted to see may not even be there. Steve.
I had known the man since he had come out of the ice. I helped him adjust to the new world he was living in, and I helped him find a place to stay. Currently, he spent most of his time at the Stark tower. He had his own apartment where he lived, but he went on so many missions and helped so much with the Avengers that he was hardly home. Some nights, when he couldn't make it home, he spent on the couch or in a spare room at the Stark tower. But that only happened when he was out late.
In the beginning he didn't want anything to do with SHIELD, so he really didn't want to be around me. Eventually though he realized I did care about him a and that I wasn't just another agent trying to recruit him. We became closer over the years, me looking after his apartment when he was hone on longer trips, him checking up on me at my place when I was sick. Typical things that friends did. Most of those things didn't stop when I got a boyfriend. He didn't check up on me or come over anymore since me and my boyfriend lived together, but we were still friends. When he would fall asleep on one of the couches at the tower I would either help help him to his spare room, or help him get back home. We were just that close. So I knew he would be there for me if I needed help. (A/n : selfish, lol). So I walked to my truck, climbed in, started it up, and headed for the Stark Tower, hoping he would be there.
As I pull into the small reserved parking lot for major employees I notice that there were only three other vehicles parked there. One was Tony's sports car and the other was a normal sleek black car that belonged to Nat. I pull the truck into park right next to a motorcycle. Steve's. So he was here. Or he was still on a mission.
I almost run to the elevator before recollecting myself and walking there instead. I press the button to go up and it immediately dings and the doors open. I step into the empty elevator silently praising the person who was in charge of the elevator music considering that classic rock was almost always playing. A minute or two after the doors close they open again at Tony's main floor. I walk out of the elevator and into the Avengers living room. I'm about to pass through and to the bedrooms when I hear a small, sleep deprived voice. "(Y/n)?"
I turn back to one of the couches and see Steve spread eagle (lol, cap american eagle) across it, half awake. "What are you doing here at this time of the night? You look like you just got out of bed." He says.
I laugh lightly and walk over to sit on the edge of the couch. "Thanks for that." But it was true. I was in a pair of comfy jean shorts that I wore to bed often as well as a fitted (f/c) scoop neck tee. My hair must've looked horrid and my eyes probably had dark circles underneath them. "And I just thought I should stop in here. I had a hunch that you might be here..... By the way, do you need help getting back to your apartment?" I ask.
He raises an eyebrow and slowly sits up. "That would've nice. I'm not really in the best condition to drive. Are you sure that you have enough time? You don't need to get back home?" He leans forward with his elbows on his knees as he asks me. I shake my head showing that it's no problem. I didn't want to bother him if he was this tired. I could tell him later or something. "Okay then. Well, think you can help an old guy up?" He looks up at me giving a crooked smile.
I stand up and hold out my hand to him. His grin becomes larger as he places his hand in mine. "Your gonna have to pull. I think my ass is glued to the couch." I tilt my head back and let out a large laugh, shaking my head. I couldn't believe Steve. But nevertheless I plant my feet slightly apart to balance my weight and I pull on his arm. He gives a little and he pops up off the couch, stumbling forward smiling the entire time. I don't get time to move back as he stumbles into me, and luckily he grabs my waist to steady the two of us. My hands come up to his shoulders so my upper half doesn't jerk back.
I look up at him, smiling at first, but my smile quickly fades as my gaze gets lost in his bright blue eyes. He stares back at me, his eyes searching my (e/c) ones. I could've sworn that the emotion behind his gaze had changed, but I couldn't put my finger on it. We hold our gaze for a while until I notice his eyes flicker down to my lips, barely long enough for me to notice. But I do and a small gasp escaped my mouth, which was the exact opposite of what I wanted. He let's go of my waist and backs up, thinking I hated him or something. I could definitely tell how he was feeling now.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have even thought of kissing you, you have a boyfriend, so its definitely not okay and-"
"Steve," I say. He was rambling. "You're fine. Come on. Let's get to my truck." I say. He looks back up at me sheepishly giving the most adorable embarrassed face I'd ever seen in my life. I tried not to show my feelings and I barely succeeded. I clear my troat and he turns and walks to the elevator. I sigh as quietly as possible and follow him. By the time I get there he's already standing there holding his hands in front of him, obviously avoiding my gaze. I step in and stand next to him.
The doors aren't even closed yet when Steve starts to talk. "(Y/n)?" I hear him say. I turn my gaze to him only to find him stand less than two steps away from me, close enough that I bad to look up a fair way to see him. Its then that I realize that I'm already in the back corner of the elevator.
"Yes Steve?"
He takes another step forward and I step back, running into the wall. He takes one last step, standing close enough I could feel his body heat. "I'm sorry." He says. But before I can ask for what, he's already kissing me. I was so surprised I didn't kiss back. I mean, what would he think of me if I did? I had to admit, I did like him and I always had, but I thought that since he didn't like me I should move on. And I did. But now I knew I never really had moved on. But just as I'm about to kiss him back he pulls away and turns around.
I stare at the back of his head as he runs his hands through his hair, flustered. As he internally freaks out I decide to tell him what I was there to tell him all along. But the elevator doors open and he power walks out of them, then the front door, all the way to my truck before I even get out of the elevator itself.
