The day had been…different for Yugi. He had gone to school with the Millennium puzzle hanging around his neck and he wore a smile on his face for the first time in months. Téa was pleasantly surprised to see the short teen in such a good mood but she wasn’t going to complain. Class had been fairly normal, up until Joey and Tristian had started picking on him during recess. In the past he would just ignore them since they normally just teased him or made fun of him. But recently he entertained their antics as Yugi thought that they were just lonely and looking for someone to take their issues out on. And honestly the tri-colour haired boy just thought that the two of them could use a friend.

The two boys eventually ran off when Téa had arrived and reprimanded them for teasing Yugi. The rest of the day was pretty normal after that until Yugi was leaving school and was leaving school when he was approached by Ushiro, the oversized teenager with eyebrows that you can land a plane on tried to convince the shorter kid to allow him to be his bodyguard and protect him from bullies.

When Yugi refused, the behemoth grabs him by his arm and drags him to the back of the school, where some of the other members of Ushiro’s crew had beaten up Joey and Tristian. This horrified the small boy as Mr. Eyebrows explains that he overheard how they picked on Yugi and wanted to help the kid out, stating he was doing it for free as he kicked Joey in the stomach. Yugi quickly got between the boys and Ushiro, stating that he won’t let him hurt his friends. This upset the larger teenager who proceeded to punch poor Yugi and knocked him to the ground before kicking him over and over again.

Joey and Tristian sees this and somehow manage to stand up despite the pain. They try to take on Ushiro, getting a few hits in before they are knocked down again by the giant’s crew. Yugi witnesses all this and wished there was a way to help them…he feels a familiar presences coming from with his puzzle before he blacks out. When he came to Ushiro and his cronies were laying on the ground shaking and screaming in fear, their eyes looking around frantically as if they were witnessing something horrifying, as if they had gone mad. Yugi just shrugs and heads over to Joey and Tristian, helping the two boys stand and took them to the nurses office.

When Yugi arrived home, Solomon grew concerned when he saw his grandson’s face was bruised. He asked him what had happened and all Yugi said was that there was an altercation at school but he was alright, he thinks he even made two friends. That did not sound right to the old man, he would phone the school later to find out what had happened.

The following day, Joey greeted Yugi at his locker and called Yugi his friend before running off to class, accidently leaving his shoe behind. Yugi was surprised but overjoyed as he ran after the blond headed teen to return his shoe. Things were looking up for the short high schooler. The next few days he got to know Joey and Tristian a bit better and they actually got along quite well. On one particular day Yugi brought his duel monsters cards to school and Joey was instantly intrigued. They spent their lunch break playing the game, even though Wheeler was struggling a little…ok a lot. But they still head fun.

The group of friends went to the game shop after school so that Joey could buy some cards so that he could build his own deck and so that Yugi could convince his grandfather to show his new friends his super rare card (which Yugi mentioned in class that very day)…unfortunately someone else had overheard the teens conversation…

Seto had started attending high school a few months after he collapsed at work. Apparently the fact that he wasn’t taking care of himself and neglecting his brother didn’t sit well with child services and threatened to take his brother away. He would not allowed this and had come to an agreement with the social worker; he would attend classes and finish high school, (despite the fact that he was a genius and one of the wealthiest men on the planet), he would delegate work to the other board members of Kaiba Corp so that he could have time to take care of Mokuba and rest (even though he was trying to get rid of them so that no one could threaten to take away his company) and he would need to see a therapist (which surprisingly he refused to do).

All in all he made it work, though he felt busier than ever but it helped to distract him from the grief and pain he was hiding. At school he wouldn’t talk to anyone and remained indifferent to the other students. He didn’t care about them and they seemed far from his equal. He shouldn’t even be there, he could’ve easily bribed or threatened child services or done something underhanded to get them off his back but that would be using tactics his step father would’ve used…

The classes weren’t that bad but they were boring and uninteresting as he had covered most of the lessons when his step father was home schooling him…making him sit for hours and study without any rest…using unethical methods of making him learn…the brunet could sometimes still feel that stupid collar around his neck even though he burnt it years ago…

But besides the classes the students were annoying. 4 of them in particular were the worst. First was the blond loud mouth that sounded like he was from Brooklyn, his pointy haired friend who followed him around, the brunet girl that wouldn’t shut up about friendship and her friends…and then there was him…the short kid with gravity defying hair. He never talked to anyone and just kept to himself. The only person he would talk to was the Téa girl. He never really spoke with the kid since he seemed to be a loner but there was something about him that annoyed him…

Then one day he showed up with a weird upside down pyramid hanging from his neck and suddenly it was like he was a completely different person. The tri-coloured haired kid started hanging out with the loud mouth and his buddy, they could be heard throughout the school with their over enthusiastic energy. It was disgusting. However day Seto Kaiba heard mention of the shorties grandfathers super rare card would change everything…

Seto was furious as he stormed out of the game shop after the old fart had refused to sell him the Blue eyes card. How dare he refuse the billionaire what clearly should’ve been his! He was seething with rage as he got into the limo, slamming the door shut before the driver drove off. Something needed to be done about this, he would make the old man pay and he would get that card…somewhere in the back of his mind a small voice was shouting at him, trying to tell him that he had missed the photo frame that hung on the wall behind the register…holding an image of a happy looking family…with a girl he had not seen for a year…but his mind was clouded with greed and anger.

Later that night Yugi was sitting with his grandfather having dinner. A lot of things were going through the kids mind. The past few days had been some of the best days he had experienced since his sister left. He finally had a group of friends who he could trust and who liked him for who he was, friends who would stand by him no matter what and who would help him through anything. And he would stay loyal to them and support them no matter what. However there was still a hole in his heart that refused to go away…a bitter loneliness…

Solomon Muto could clearly see something was bothering his grandson, "So…anything exciting happen at school today?", "Hm?" the boy looked up from his half eaten plate of food, "Oh um...no, not really. Just the usual stuff..." he answered in a soft voice as he looked back down at his food..."I can see there's something heavy on your heart...I am here to listen my boy." the old man said as he kept his eyes on him, knowing exactly what was bothering the young boy...

Yugi set down his fork as he sighed softly, "It's just...it's been so long since we've gotten anything from Lillian...I'm starting to wonder if she's..." he fought back the tears as the images of his sister lying somewhere dying or already dead filled his mind, making him tremble. With a soft smile on his face, Solomon put his hand over his grandsons, "I'm sure she's fine Yugi. Maybe it's just taking sometime for the postcard to get here."

"I know...I just miss her...", "I do too. I miss watching you two fool around in my game shop when you should have been doing your chores." the old man said as he thought back to when Yugi and Lillian were still little, letting out a soft chuckle as the memory of the two pretended to be knights on an epic quest to save the kingdom, using the brooms they were supposed to be using to sweep the shop as swords and horses instead.

Yugi smiled a little as he remembered some of those times too, "Yeah, she always found a way to make anything boring fun. Although that would get us into trouble." he said as the smile fell from his face, "I just want her back...it's been almost a year now..."

"I know it's been hard for you to be without her. But a lot has changed as well. You have a great group of friends now who will never let you down. And who will stand by your side through thick and thin. I mean Joey and Tristen use to bully you quite a bit back then, and now look at you all." he said trying to cheer up the boy.

"I know...but they still can't replace her..." he mumbled softly as he stood up and took his dishes to the kitchen, throwing the uneaten food in the dustbin before setting his plate in the sink. “I have homework to go do..." he called out to his grandpa as he headed up to his room...leaving the old man behind to clear the table. Solomon sighed to himself. He had to admit he was also worried about his granddaughter...but he knew she could take care of herself. She was a strong girl. And somehow he had a feeling that she would be back soon...or maybe that was just him hoping she would...

Yugi closed his bedroom door behind him, looking over at his open school bag that held the homework for the following day, which he wasn't in the mood to do. Instead, he walked over to his bed, crouching down and pulled out a shoe box that was tucked away safely. Sitting on the floor, he stared at the box for a few long moments before opening it. Inside were a bunch of old photos and 11 postcards. Carefully taking out some of the photos, he slowly looked through them, each one holding the image of a favourite event or memory from when Yugi and Lillian were kids. Everything from vacations to birthdays to silly things that happened, like when the two of them were trying to bake a cake for their grandpa’s birthday and failed horrible. When their parents got home, the kitchen was a mess. There was flour, sugar, bowls, utensils, anything you could think have scattered around the kitchen, the two young culprits standing in the middle of the mess, holding up what looked like a mash of chocolate icing and mushy cake, a smile on their faces. Despite this, the two adults just laughed and dad fetched the camera and snapped a picture of the two messy kids.

A tear ran down the boy’s cheek as he stared at the photo. Both of them standing there covered in flour and chocolate. He slowly ran his finger over Lillian's cheek on the photo...the door opened slightly as Solomon peeked in ever so slightly seeing his grandson sitting there as the boy went through the photos...the old man feel a tear run down his cheek as well...

Deep within the puzzle…

Well the boy that resided in the maze w had learned two things…one that this room of never ending staircase was a nightmare and two…he was a spirit residing in a cursed object that belonged to boy who was his host. He had figured this out when he found himself passing the boys body to save him from a bully who in the spirits opinion deserved what he got…whatever it was that he did to the guy…the boy would admit that his memories of what he had done was a bit hazy.

He found himself walking through the halls of the maze that was his soul room, trying to find some kind of answers to who he was or why he was there…but he came up with nothing.

He stopped walking when he heard…crying? Raising a brow, he followed the sound of the noise, he could feel…sorrow and grief the closer he got to the sound of the crying. He eventually reached a metal door with a strange eye craved into it. He could hear someone sobbing on the other side of door, he could sense the despair and heartbreak. And he didn’t know why but…he wanted to console whoever this was…he wanted to comfort him…was this his host?

He looked for a handle to open the door but found none. He rested his hand on the door, wishing he could find a way to open it. Maybe there was a way…he would find it someday…that was a promise…
