Agents Rossi and Hotchner paced back and forth in a police briefing room. Neither of them could stop moving. This particular case was troubling to them. They managed to identify the two assailants, Magnus Bolten and Jonas Allister.
The two had served time in jail before and have been known to conspire, but nothing as severe as kidnapping or murder. Usually it was robberies, DWI's, or assault charges. This was most unlike their usual MO.
"It's a small crime.. But a child's life is at stake.. Think.." Hotch murmured to himself, pacing back and forth. His shoes clacked on the tile floors, his hands running through his black hair. He was still young, but the work aged him.
"I am thinking." Rossi responded, eventually just taking a chair out and sitting down. He pitied that he couldn't create of a solution, find patterns, motivations; anything really.
"I was talking to myself." Hotch remarked, getting more and more frustrated. It didn't make sense. Why would two co-conspirers suddenly change their entire crime scheme? The Reid robbery started off as just a robbery, but turned into the kidnapping of seven year old Spencer Reid.
"Oh.." Rossi murmured again, and then it hit him. The motive. "Witnesses."
"We went through that. They would've killed and dumped the body by now." Hotch shot down, pacing faster back and forth.
"No no. What if one didn't want witnesses? Which one has a history in assault... Uh, Magnus Bolton. Maybe he was the one that convinced Jonas Allister to kidnap Spencer? Magnus is the more violent of the two, the one most likely to protect his reputation and his name. Prison reports confirm that."
"Continue." Hotch said as soon as Rossi stopped. He was eager to know where his fellow agent was going with this, yet skeptical as well.
"Magnus was known for hiding out in basements and caves. Some basements were of occupied houses; he lived in one for three months before the family found out. He's probably hiding Spencer there. Despite the assault history he wouldn't kill Spencer unless absolutely necessary so when we approach we need to be stealthy." Rossi finished, proud of himself for his solving.
"Makes perfect sense.." Hotch admitted, giving Rossi a pat on the back for support. They might actually find this kid before he's seriously hurt, or killed.
