9 Years ago. California, May, 2019.

I lived in a small, rural town with my mom and my cat, Noir. We had a quiet life-just my mom raising me and working 2 full-time jobs to keep food on the table. You might be wondering, what about your father? To be honest, I never once saw the man. My mom said one day he went to work and never returned.
My parents both have/had jobs in the city, about 70 miles from here. I never knew the name of the city, and rarely heard about it. It's like we functioned as two separate universes; two opposite entities that happened to be fairly close. The only time I got a glimpse of the city was on our little TV at 8:00 a.m. every morning with the news reporter, Andy Hurley. The city seemed so fun; loud, but fun, and full of energy. Until one day, an advertisement flashed on the screen with a strange logo of-a smiley face?- and said "Better Living industries!" In black letters, which stood out against the crisp white background, which seemed so plain. My mom turned around and, without turning to look at me, said, "Grab the cat. Get your things. I'll meet you there in a few minutes."
"Mommy, is everything okay?" I hugged her for protection, her toned arms embraced me and then carried me up the stairs. Noir happily trotted behind us.
"It's gonna be okay, sweetie," her eyes filled with tears, "find them. They'll protect you."
"Who?" I started to choke up from keeping in my tears.
Mom kissed me on the forehead and ran downstairs, closing and locking the door behind her. I ran around my room and collected my prized possessions- a notebook, a stuffed bear, and some pencils.
The fists pounding against the door downstairs startled me. "We know you're in there, Agent 3416!"
I then heard gunshots and scampering feet. I held my breath and slowly made my way over to the open window, where I'd make my escape. Just before I could even stop to consider my other options of escape routes, I heard footsteps coming up the stairs, drawing nearer to the door to my room.
"Open up! We know you're in there!"
"C'mon, Noir!" I grabbed my cat who was huddled in the corner for protection. Just as I swung my legs over the windowsill, the people kicked my door open, and I saw my mom run out behind them with a gun in her hand. She put one man in a choke hold and held the weapon to his temple. The other men formed a circle around her, their weapons all pointed at her.
"Just go! Hurry- I love you..." my mom managed to get out before tears streamed down her cheeks again. Without thinking, I turned, and jumped. I landed on a convenient withering shrub; I recovered, brushed the leaves off of me, and started to run.
