" I don't know if I can man, I think my mother is literally going insane. "
I said into the phone, flipping the pencil in between my fingers as I looked down at the insulting blank paper in front of me." You say as if it's shocking. I'm pretty sure it's just a parenting thing, Happens all the time. It can't hurt you just to ask, can it ? " Asked my friend, Bane, from the other line. I could hear the voices of his giggling parents through the phone and judging by the muffled sounds, I was guessing he was outside, sitting on the back fence.
" It just might, actually. She might murder me. " I said and dropped the pencil down on my desk, completely giving up on the essay I was meant to have finished about 48 hours ago.
" I might murder you if you don't ask. I can't survive here on my own ! What do you expect me to do ? Or maybe you want your only friend in the world to die ? "
" Die of what ? " I asked, raking my fingers through my hair. " Your property is the safest one there is. Would switching houses make you feel better ? Because if so I would be glad to oblige. "
" boredom ! " he yelled into the phone, causing me to wince and pull it away from my ear slightly.
I rolled my eyes. " Okay, dear. " I said sweetly into the phone before leaving it abandoned on the bed and jogging down the stairs, the muffled shouts growing only more distant as I went. " Mom ?! " I shouted, wandering around the house to find the crazed woman.
About ten minutes later I found her in her room, looking out of the large window and down at the city below. Odd that every time I see her she seems to have gotten younger. Today she could pass at about sixteen as she stared out the open window, the wind blowing her dark hair back over her shoulder.
But the thing is, ever since my father had left, she'd been so sad. Even though he'd only been gone about six years, I couldn't remember him at all.
Three years ago, I got into a car crash,
Thus loosing all memories that included him. The doctors said that I was still dealing with his absence at the time, so given the opportunity, my mind erased him from existence. . . At least to me. Though I always thought differently.I sighed slightly, thus accidentally getting my mother's attention. She turned her head, looking at me with her big brown eyes. Quickly she erases the sadness from her face, putting on a fake smile as she spoke. " Hey. " she said, her voice like silk as always.
I smile back at her. " Hey. Do you think I could go spend the night at Bane's tonight ? " I ask, giving into her game. I knew she wouldn't talk about anything that was upsetting her anyways.
" Oh, sure. " she said with a one shouldered shrug. " Why not ? " My mother tilted her head ever so slightly, a habit both me and her share.
I tilt mine back, jet black hair falling into my eyes as I smile. " Thanks mom. " I say as I run back out the door. I heard her say something from behind me, something I didn't completely comprehend as I ran back to my bedroom. I picked up the
Phone and held it to my ear. " Yeah, I can stay over. "I heard Bane sigh over the line. " Thank. Fucking. God. " He said, causing me to chuckle as I opened my window, crawling out and into the roof. There was no screen on my window, so I did this all the time. My neighbors hated it, though my mother knew I wouldn't get myself hurt so it didn't bother her which was all that mattered really.
" So when are you coming ? " he asked, immediately impatient as always. I shrug, even though he can't see me.
" I don't know. Whenever I guess. "
I offered as I balanced on the top of the roof." Not good enough. " he said in annoyance, though I knew it wasn't with me but with his parents. By now the loving giggles had turned into raged shouts in the background.
I chuckle. " Patience. " I say into the phone. " Whenever you can get one of your bipolar parents over here. I haven't a ride. "
" Did you just say you haven't a ride ? " asked my friend in a mocking tone.
" Shut up, dick head. " I snarled. " You got the idea. "
He laughed. " Yeah. Okay. I'll talk to ya' later then. "
" Yes, dear. " I said before hanging up the phone and shoving it into my back pocket and humming softly to myself.
As a odd habit of mine, I began dancing to the steady rhythm beating against my skull in a numb pattern. Closing my eyes, I dance along the roof of my house, balancing with ease. I move around for a few minutes before getting an odd feeling. A feeling like someone, or something was watching me. I stop my dancing, open my eyes and look around me. It takes me only a moment to see the figure standing at the edge of the forest a few yards away from my house. I squint my eyes, attempting to see a face or some sort of detail to the blank silhouette. But there seemed to be nothing.
Just then, the odd person tilted it's head slightly to the side. I sucked in a breath, they were watching me. And they knew I was doing the same to them.
Suddenly they kicked one leg out behind them, and took a deep bow before straightening and taking one step back, immediately disappearing in the tree line.
" What the - "
" M ! " I heard my mother's voice from inside the open window. My head shot around, staring in the direction with a puzzled look on my face.
" Y-yeah ?.. " I stuttered do to my unease.
" Dinner ! Come inside, Hun ! " she called.
For a moment I merely stood there, shaken, but eventually I walked across the roof and dropped down back into the house, seeing my mother standing at the door with a smile. She furrowed her brow at my expression.
" Is everything alright?... " she asked, walking to me and touching my cheek gently with a soft hand, staring worryingly at me.
" Yeah. Of course. " I replied and smiled at her. " Everything is fine. "
She tilted her head, a small smile on her face. " You sure ? "
I nodded in response. " Mmhmm. " I offered.
She nodded once. " Okay. " she smiled. " Come downstairs when you're ready okay ? " she said as he pulled away, walking to the door of my bedroom.
" Alright " I said, tilting my head as she looked back at me for a moment before exiting.
I turn my head, looking at the open window for a second before walking over and slamming it shut, closing my curtains as well before leaving behind my mother.
