I feel it's odd, how just one person can have such a huge effect on your life, how one small event can change everything, forever. Though despite the fact that these things can make an impact greater than anything else in your world, you never know when it's coming.
After a long night of running around like madmen, Bane and I finally ended up back at his house. Not that we ever stopped acting insane.
Bane lay across my stomach, his elbows braced on the bed beside me as he laughed. And I, also laughing, lay under him, my head hanging backwards off of the bed and my gaze directed towards the radiant tv in front of us. We had been playing the same video game for who knows how bloody long, though it never got boring. Not with Bane. Nothing ever really did when it was just the two of us.
We both let out a loud sound of defeat as our team lost but it soon faded into even louder laughter. We stay like that, an insane mess of two boys who had no idea what tonight would lead them to, until eventually the both of us calmed down.
He sighed, resting his chin on my chest as he kicked his feet up in the air. He had always acted girly, though only when the both of us were alone. He had come out to me, but only in so many words. I guess he himself just didn't want to accept it as him until he was sure people wouldn't judge him about it.
" You know, we need to do this more often. "
He said contently. I suppose he needed a friend as much as I did right now." I know. "
I replied with a sigh.
" I've just been busy with things lately. "I explained with a shrug, though it wasn't the whole truth. I've really just been too... Terrified... To go around anyone other than my mother. There's just been this eerie presence that has been following me for a few weeks now, and the creep near my house did not help, I feel like I would appear insane to anyone who saw me in this state of anxiety.
" Oh no, "
Said Bane as he narrowed his eyes, pulling me from my thoughts.I looked up at him with an arched eyebrow.
" Oh no ? Oh no what ? "
I asked uncertainly." The look ! "
He exclaimed.
" You have the look ! "
He said and poked my cheek.I scrunched my nose in confusion and he giggled, rolling off of me and falling off of the bed with a thud. I laughed, falling backwards without his weight to keep me from doing so.
And once again, we laughed and laughed. That is, until I heard another bang. At first I thought nothing of it, but then I realized both me and Bane had already fallen to the floor, and nothing else in the room could have made the sound. And after thinking about it, I realized that the noise sounded distant, in fact, it didn't sound like it was upstairs at all.
I looked over at Bane and saw that he was staring at me with a scared look on his face. He arched his eyebrows, as if asking if I heard it too. I have a small nod and then it sounded again. Both me and Bane immediately jumped to our feet, backing away from the door.
The bangs kept coming, getting closer and more frequent with every one. Judging by the sound, whatever was doing this was already upstairs, and dangerously close to Bane's bedroom. But then suddenly, it stopped.
I glanced over at Bane and saw that he still remained frozen in fear, staring at the door. I placed my hand on his arm and he hesitantly looked over at me.
" It's okay, Bane. It was probably just Buster. "
I assured him. Buster was Bane's dog, he didn't seem to be big enough to make that loud of a bang but I had to calm Bane down somehow. The look on Bane's face was one of complete horror. He gave a quick, tense nod.
" Y-yeah.... "
He stuttered.
" Buster... "
Said Bane, repeating the dog's name once more before he turned his attention to the ground for a moment, avoiding my gaze. He sighed, shaking his head as he looked at the door again, jaw clenched.I followed his line of sight and we stood there for a moment, silently. . . Though dreadfully . . . Maybe a moment too long. . .
The figure from my house popped in my mind, the odd way they stood, their body build, their height. . . All together, they seemed big enough, strong enough, and disturbing enough to follow us here and brake into this house, for one. Obviously from the earlier event I had today with the. . . Person. . . They didn't mind being discovered. Actually, if I didn't know any better, I would say that's exactly what they wanted to do.
This person, whoever they may be, wanted me to know where they were. They liked knowing that they had power over me, and in this case, over my best friend, Bane. They craved the fear in our eyes, in our hearts as we realize there is nothing we can do to stop this person, we were nothing, a mere insect. And now we were trapped, trapped with them and they had complete domination.
I don't care if I never saw the thing making the noises, I had that same feeling in my heart. As if it was slowly being crushed by a force I had no control over. The fear was painfully overwhelming. I knew that person was here, and I knew they wanted something, and it had to be from me.
Perhaps all they wanted was the satisfaction that they scarred two innocent boys for the rest of their life, or maybe they came for something much, much more than that. . .
No matter what, this wouldn't end well. . .
I turned my head, looking over at My still terrified friend.
" Bane, "
I began and was shocked my voice didn't shake or waver at all.
" Get your jacket. "
I told him and walked to the bedroom door, grabbing the knob.If this person planned to play a game with us and our sanity, I planned to play along.
