Chapter 7.

I snapped back to my senses three days later. I clenched my fists on the crisp bed sheets and pulled a Ducktridge feather pillow over my face, groaning loudly.

Kara, Tydus and a doctor were in the room watching me. The doctor pulled the pillow from my face and shone a light in my eyes, almost blinding me. I directed my eyes over to my friends instead and gave them a big smile to prove I was ok. They relaxed a little and sat on the bed beside me as the doctor left the room. "We thought you were dead..." Tydus said. "Actually, your heart stopped quite a few times when they were fixing you up." Way to make me feel better...

When I looked down at my body, every scratch, tear and gash was covered in some clear, sticky paste. Some had healed and scabbed over but the rest looked brand new.

Tydus stood up from his chair and left the room, mumbling some excuse about seeing if he could find any spare Ducktridge in the kitchens and I was left with Kara.

She looked terrible. Her face was pale and she had dark bags under her tear stained eyes. Her usually flawless hair was messy and looked like she hasn't brushed it for days. She looked across at me before breaking down in tears. She had always seemed like a strong person so I didn't think something like this would effect her so much. I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her close to me, she hunched up against my pale chest and cried. I rested my chin on her shoulder and closed my eyes slowly. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach again as I breathed in her scent. She shuddered a little as she cried and then pulled away, wiping her eyes with the back of her sleeve. "I'm sorry. I just...seeing you laid there, I thought you wouldn't wake up." She sniffled.

"Hey, you can't get rid of me that easily." I whispered to her. "It takes more than a pack of metal super wolves to kill Alex West." I joked.

She nodded and touched a scratch on my forehead. "Close your eyes Alex..." She said quietly.

I frowned a little and did as she said, thinking she was going to put more paste on the scratch. What came next completely surprised me.

I felt her lips press against mine, her arms slid around my neck and pulled me closer to her. The shock of it nearly made me pull away but I managed to control myself just in time. I kissed her back softly, tilting my head to the side. My hand rested on her cheek and the thousands of thoughts that normally ran through my mind completely stopped. The only thing I could think of was her, and I didn't care.

I heard someone at the door and pulled away quickly, my arms dropping back to my sides. Tydus stood there awkwardly and glanced between me and Kara, who had taken a sudden interest in a speck of blood on the sheets.

"Uh...is this a bad time? 'Cause I can come back later if you-"

"N-no, perfect timing. Did you find any food?" I interrupted, desperate to change the subject. Kara looked at my gratefully and I smiled back at her, my eye twitching in a subtle wink.

He shook his head dejectedly. "No...no food..." He said, sounding legitimately upset. I couldn't help but laugh at him as a doctor walked through the door.

He held out some strange looking leaves. They were a dark green with golden veins and looked succulent and juicy. I stared up at him blankly, confused on what he wanted me to do with them. "They're some nice leaves you got there..." I said, unaware on how idiotic I sounded.

"You eat them, they're a painkiller." He explained and I instantly became aware of the ripping pain in every cut. I took them quickly and chewed them, savouring the sweet taste before letting them slide down my throat.

Painkiller was the one word for it. I couldn't feel anything after I had eaten them. I felt hyperactive and my eyes kept flicking around the room as if I was watching a fly. My fingers drummed a pattern on my leg, a happy tune that had been one of my favourite songs back home. I smiled stupidly to myself and began rabbiting on about how great my life was right now.
