Chapter 4.

Whispering voices filled my dreams and I shuffled my head on the pillow fitfully, trying to shake them away and savour the sleep that I was getting. The muttering voices sounded foreign in my ears, making them completely discernible which frustrated me greatly.

Everything im my dream went black, engulfing me in a threatening darkness, and then lit up again in moonlight, leaving me in the clearing in the forest where Kara and I had come face to face with the wolf the night before.

This time, instead of there only being one wolf, there was a whole pack. Each one growled viciously, making the blood vibrate in my veins, leaving my knees trembling. Completely circled and surrounded, I had nowhere to go and was completely defenceless against them. I didn't even have Kara by my side. Legs like coiled springs tensed up and the growling and snarling grew louder and more deathly. I bent my trembling knees slightly, willing them to carry me away from the circle of wolves if I had to. Trying to slow my breath became an impossible task and I was left wiping beading sweat from my palms onto my trousers.

The first wolf, the most devilish of them all, lifted one great paw from the ground before resting it against the leaf litter again, barking once and baring its gnashing fangs. The wolf bent its legs, leaping into the air, reaching out a huge paw, swiping it through the air and-.

"WAKE UP NEWBIE! TODAY'S YOUR BIG DAY!" A voice bellowed right next to my ear at about a million decibels. Kicking out with my foot, I got it caught in the sheets, sitting bolt upright with a cowardly shout of terror and falling out of my bed onto the floor, tangled in the bedsheets. I writhed around for a few seconds, trying to unravel myself from the web of cotton.

"Are you sure he's the hero?" The voice asked, sounding extremely skeptical.

"Definitely sure." I heard Kara's voice as I fought my way out of the sheets, relaxing a little and pulling the covers off of my head. " You've just not seen what he can do you."

Rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, I looked up into the face of my bellowing attacker. His hair was short-ish like mine but laid completely flat on his head whereas mine was stubborn and refused to lay flat at the front. Deep brown eyes that seemed both sad and lively at the same time looked back at me. He appeared around seventeen but I knew he was older, probably ageing at the same rate as Kara. A dark green shirt and combat trousers, like the ones Kara had given me after my escape attempt adorned his body and a long sword strapped at his side caught my eye, glinting in the minimal light that crept in through the crack in the curtains. As he saw me staring at the weapon, he drew it, pointed it at my throat and began to laugh hysterically.

Although it was probably hilarious from his point of view, I didn't see the joke at all. I stared down at the sword with wide eyes and gulped, feeling my Adam's apple bob in pure fear. I'm pretty sure all the blood drained from my face as I scrambled back against the wall, trying to get away from the weapon as Kara snatched it from his hand. "Look at him!" She snapped angrily, pointing at me but keeping her eyes on the other boy. "You've terrified him now, well done Tydus." She shook her head and sighed, sliding his sword back into its sheath, the look on her face hinting that she wouldn't care if she missed and hit somewhere a lot more painful. She passed me some more clean clothes like his and dragged him from the room by the wrist, giving me a reassuring smile and closing the door behind them with a click, leaving me alone again.

It took me a while to work out what had just happened to me, but I cleared my head and stood up, getting changed and making the bed, still staying completely silent. I was glad to be wearing something other than white cotton clothing. I supposed that was only for hospital patients and members of the gospel choir. My hands slapped across my cheeks lightly to persuade some colour to rush back into the skin, not wanting to look terrrified still when I went to speak to the pair.
