3. New Faces
'Keep rowing. I can make it. They'll never catch me. I can't let them catch me.' Katie thought to herself. The dream seemed so vivid that it was actually happening. She could feel the sweat rolling down her face, she could feel the pain in her arms. Everything was so real, but seemed so distant as though it ever really happened.
In reality, she was hanging on a tree branch, inches from falling off.
In her dreams, she was nearing the Neverland Star that was right at the water's edge. She could feel a force pulling her toward the star, pulling her down. Her eyes shut tighter, awaiting impact, but she couldn't exactly figure out what. Her muscles tensed.
Her eyes flew wide open when she felt a soft surface hit her back. There was a small pain that spread throughout her system, she just lay there. Katie just took this as an opportunity to look around. The branch that she fell from was above her.
"So it wasn't a dream." Katie murmured to herself.
She could hear a gentle tide of the water, the sand slowly shifting underneath her body. Flowers covered the tree that she slept on. It was all completely beautiful to her. She found no way this place could possibly be worse than London. Well, she could definitely say it was a million times more pretty and calm.
"Miss Katie! Miss Katie!" She could hear a voice from afar coming closer. "Miss Katie, are you okay?"
Katie tilted her head back to see Smee running toward her, carrying what looked like a basket. He had the most shocked face...
"Yes I'm fine Mr. Smee." She yelled back.
"Wh-what happened?"
"Fell of the tree, had a bad dream." Her stomach rumbled as she talked. As a reflex, she hand fell over her stomach.
"Oh you poor thing."
Katie tried to get up, but a little of the pain of falling was still there. "Mr. Smee, could you help me up? Please?"
"Yes, of course." Smee put down the basket and came up to Katie's shoulders. He placed his hands under her shoulders and slowly pushed her up.
"Thanks." She said sort of weakly.
"No problem. Oh and here." He went back over to the picnic basket. "I brought you some food. Don't eat it all at once, I don't know if and when I'll be able to bring more."
Katie looked inside the picnic basket. "This is perfect. This is about 3 times the food I would usually have on a normal day." There was a variety of fruits and vegetables, with a bit of cooked meat and fried fish. "I've never even tried meat or fish like this. The orphanage only had mushed up vegetables and people only gave me enough money for a few apples or for that little café shop that had a half sandwich waiting for me at least twice a week, but even those were just vegetable sandwiches."
"I'm sorry."
"You have nothing to be sorry about."
"SMEE!" Yelled Captain Hook from the ship.
Smee's face just froze. "I'll try to be back later. Just stay on the beach, stay away from everything and everyone else."
"I know." Katie replied.
Then Smee scurried off to the boat and left. Katie took the picnic basket and climbed back up her tree. She hung the basket on a branch and placed the fabric, that somehow managed to stay on the tree, in the basket. She found a peach in the basket. It was huge. Not like a regular peach, it was a Neverland peach. Katie climbed to the top of the tree and bit into the succulent fruit.
The view was absolutely magnificent. Out in the sea floated Captain Hook's pirate ship. The white sandy beach covered the shore, the border between the ocean and the jungle. There were many trees, all covered in vines and flowers of all different colors. Way in the distance stood a mountain, to the right of it was a lagoon, it was a bit gloomy for the happiness of the island, on the left side there was smoke. Katie thought it was either some people making a fire, or a forest fire. She decided not to worry about it. A bit further from the island was another place, it looked like a castle, there were dark clouds over it. Katie then knew she would have to stay away from there.
Katie found herself dozing off, so she climbed down to the best branch, took out the fabric and used it as a blanket. Some wind started blowing, and Katie became aware of it pretty quickly. She looked in the basket and found some rope. Smee must have put that there, and forgot to say. Katie still found no reason to doubt him. She tied the rope around the branch and around her waist, put the fabric over herself and fell into a nap.
"FIRE!" She heard someone yell. That someone was Hook of course.
"You'll never catch me. You old codfish!" Yelled the voice of a young boy.
"You can get him Peter!" Get him Peter!" You can do it Peter!" Yelled a chorus of boys.
A canon ball flew toward the shore, hit the exact tree she was sleeping on. Katie tried to stay away from where all the voices were, she tried not to scream as the branch fell with the tree. She was trying to untie the rope. Luckily she managed to, right before she fell 5 feet to the ground.
When her eyes opened, she saw 6 boys, varying in age just a bit, all wearing different animal skins as clothes, except for two, who looked like twins. 'These are the boys Smee must have been talking about.' Katie thought. She slowly reached for her fabric, stood up, and ran into the jungle.
The boys just stood there with their mouths wide open.
